About this deal

The FiiO FH3 is a hybrid entry-level IEM. It mixes a classic dynamic driver (10mm Titanium driver) with two Knowles BA to reproduce the full (hearable) frequency range. Like the FH5, its big brother, the FH3 gets a very cool aluminum/magnesium shell, that feels both sturdy and comfy, detachable cables, and most of all the S.Turbo acoustic design.

Bass for all Fiio earphones has been a strong point for their tunings and the FD3 does not disappoint. Never heard a neutral Fiio earphone so bass is always a part of their house sound. Music is not music with a gimpy bass end and here the FD3 performs excellent. While their FD5 and FH5s both take on a bit more dense, more textured deeper bass ends, the FD3 is most definitely satisfying for bass. Bass has got a good solid impact for mid bass and shows a deep reaching rumble when called for for modern genres of music. Speedy punchy for faster metal music and well textured sub bass for hip hop which shows its versatility. What are the specifics of the brand new FD3 diaphragm? What are the differences from that of the FD5?Bass on the FH3 is somewhat leaner but cleaner, tighter, better controlled with greater dynamic impact and layering.

The midrange of the FiiO FD3 has a mildly warmish tonality with a pretty transparent, airy and lively character. The sense of transparency and airiness in this area is quite impressive when I do listen to vocals or instruments. It is not a detail monster, however it offers a good level of resolution for an In-Ear Monitor at this price range that makes it to a real bargain. The carrying case that arrives with the FD3 is the typical clear clamshell case that arrives with most other FiiO IEMs. I raved about this accessory before because it even came with their entry-level FD1. This is still a nice addition to an IEM at the FD3’s price point though. Thanks to their ever evolving range of (usually) affordable but (mostly) excellent products. IEM, headphone amps, DACs, and obviously DAPs, they did it all and did it well. So much that when a new player/amp/IEM comes out, they usually become the benchmark that other brands have to refer to, like the mighty FiiO M17 , the FiiO Q7 or even the good old E10K-TC. Sub-bass is something near to excellent at this price range . It’s rare to see something which has this much sub-bass yet not overriding the bass. Tonality is on slightly natural to leaner side with very good dynamics. The decay is fast but this still maintains good timbre, a slightly more extension on the sub-bass notes would have great to have a very big room filling experience. There is great texture in the sub-bass and it’s quite energetic and goes quite deep to fill your cups with a smile .

to reduce unneeded distortion yet also surprisingly light, allowing the driver to have excellent transient response. The result is a driver with excellent sound quality and minimal distortion with the added bonus of being ultra-sensitive. Still, FiiO promises “deep bass thanks to the bass-enhancing acoustic flute design + large dynamic driver”, something I find hard to believe but, who knows, that wouldn’t be the first time the brand surprises me… in a good way! The FiiO Series That design quirk made me so happy; I wish all headphone makers would use this from now on. Save a little stress when we place the cable connectors on the wrong shell and must reverse them.

Design

The pelican style storage case has is the one we know from previous FiiO products that I really like to use. I am still using my F9 for clarity and enjoyment of everything in an audio file, whilst I wanted this as a replacement for my old Sony bassy IEMs that have low mids and highs when the bass is up.

In my experience, the comfort is excellent, it’s a small shell, but it is a very dense feeling. So, physical weight fatigue is a thing. But it is not a huge problem. I can wear the IEM for hours and not get tired or sore. On a last note, the exteriors are polished and electroplated, which gives the exterior shells an intense sheen, but are also fingerprint magnets. In the same way, with male vocals, the FD3 presents an honest presentation of how the vocalists naturally sound. The vocal texture is present, but not exaggerated, so vocalists like Josh Groban that have a warmer vocal presentation will still shine through, but drier vocalists will remain dry.FiiO has always been concerning about exceptional high quality craftsmanship, and the FD3/FD3 Pro is no exception to this rule. The aluminium-magnesium alloy main body is made in an industrial process combining five-axis CNC processing and hand polishing. The pin-point precision of machinery and the delicate touch only possible by human hands come together to create a phenomenal piece in the FD3/FD3 Pro. The shells are also quite heavy, full-cast zinc alloy, and dense as hell, I call these designs “little lead weights”. And that extra weight with the right shell design will make the fit more stable in your ear and less likely to pop out when you are moving around. The FiiO FD3 is a quite efficient In-Ear Monitor thanks to an impedance of 32 Ω and a sensitivity of 111dB/mW. This makes the FD3 pretty compatible with most audio sources like Smartphone’s, Tablets or small Digital Audio Players/Mp3 players that do have in general a relative weak amplification. Upstream, FiiO also employs second-generation asymmetric internal and external magnetic circuit systems. This design has been optimized to generate a stronger magnetic field compared to a typical magnetic circuit system, resulting in a higher magnetic field density for a “more robust sound.” To push things further, the FiiO FD11 is equipped with N52 neodymium magnets, rated at 111dB/mW@1kHz, ensuring powerful sound reproduction even with low-powered sources.
