Franz: May I just skip this part? Kidding, kidding! Okay, so I took both the AL, and the Skyline Sport on a test drive. I wrote with both of them posted for about 10 minutes each. Please understand that this Sport is a little too short unposted for my bear paw to write more than 5 words so I just kept the cap posted as I wrote on my journal. Because of the narrow 9.4mm section, my hand cramped up and I noticed my hand gripping the pen tighter than usual. The Skyline Sport is a very light pen and I didn’t enjoy writing with it. The AL Sport however, has a nice weight to it and my hand was a little bit more comfortable. The length of the Sport when posted was fairly comfortable for me. This particular pen comes in a box which is just a steel box. It kinds of reminds me of an old fashioned mint box with a hinge top to it. Inside the box you can insert the pen. On the cap is engraved Kaweco AL sport Germany. The cap is quite large which makes it compact and small. You can unscrew the cap and post it as we have pictured here. The nib is a stainless steel nib and etched on the nib is the Kaweco logo as well as some other etchings. On the end of the cap is the Kaweco logo. Aside from the material being aluminum as opposed to resin, the other key difference is the ability to unscrew the nib unit from the AL Sport models. The regular Sport nib housing is often glued to the grip, so you have to pull the nib and feed if you want to swap nibs. With the AL Sport, you simply unscrew the entire nib unit and you’re ready to switch nibs. Another part of the cap design that is great is the shape. The sides of the cap are octagonal rather than being round. This squared side cap design keeps the pen from rolling both with the cap on or the cap posted. Because the Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen does not come standard with a clip there is nothing to keep the pen from rolling off the desk.The AL Sport is made of aluminum, a sturdy metal that is lighter than metals like brass or steel. Most AL Sports have matte, anodized finishes that won’t chip or flake, but they can still be gouged by other objects like house keys. Silicone Grease: Helpful for those who wish to convert their Kaweco Sport fountain pen to an eyedropper pen. The third generation of Kaweco Art Sport was released in 2018. The pens in this collection had names that described their colours. This edition comprised eleven different colours (some of them were available both with CT or GT: Dark Blue, Coral Red, Marble Green & Yellow, Marble Red, Metallic Green, Milk & Coffee, Perlmutt Orange, Metallic Turquoise, Real Blue, Tiger Eye and Violet. Pam: Disclaimer, the EF of my Kaweco was too broad for my taste. Given that, it was still a good nib for daily use. I used the pen on cheap office paper and it performed admirably. I didn’t find the nib to be too dry, given my choice of paper at work. The nib writes more true to size on Tomoe River paper, unsurprisingly. I very much enjoy it when I am in the mood for a “bolder” EF line to show off the ink color in my hobonichi. This German EF nib does require me to change the size of my handwriting, ever so slightly, to accommodate the “bolder” line, which results ins a “bubblier” handwriting for me.

I was really surprised how much I enjoyed the 1.1 stub. It’s probably my favorite of all the Kaweco nibs that I have tried. Its a great nib that has the right amount of ink flow so that the line remains relatively crisp and shows off a decent amount of shading in the ink color. If I had to choose between an EF or the 1.1 stub, I would choose the 1.1 stub. My ongoing taste change in nib sizes is very likely due to Franz-fluence (Franz’s influence for those who are pun adverse.) I find the pen to be extremely satisfying to hold. The brushed aluminum finish feels very soft and smooth. I personally prefer the aluminum body to either the steel or brass, as both are significantly heavier than the aluminum and the brass makes my hands smell strange. I also have one of the plastic Kaweco Sports, which I like, but the AL Sport is so much more substantial. I feel like it is a pen that will easily provide a lifetime of use.To be quite honest when I first got the pen the nib was a bit dry and the writing performance wasn't the best. I have heard others that have experienced this same thing with Kaweco fountain pens. I had also seen a video from Stephen Brown about making a pen wetter and I decided to try it with the pen. It improved the writing drastically and I now enjoy using the pen. The nib is much wetter and the writing is smooth. It seems the more I use the pen the better it got.

I really like the design of the Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen, not so much for the look of the pen but the functionality. It is small and compact and ideal for carrying with you on the go. The cap design makes the pen short when the cap is closed but when you post the cap on the pen it extends the length of the pen by over an inch. Without the cap posted the pen is small but the size with the cap posted makes the pen easy and comfortable to use. It isn't necessary to apply silicone grease to the colored AL Sports, as the anodized aluminum is more resistant to galling. However, should you find it becoming more difficult to separate the pen's barrel from the section, you can also apply a small amount of silicone grease to the threads. Pen Type Thank you for any help with this decision, and if anyone has any photos of their well-used Sports, I'd love to see them!!The Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen is made from a plastic resin that is lightweight. There are just a couple branding items on the pen. On the side of the cap is engraved in gold lettering "Kaweco Sport" and on top of the cap is a gold medallion with the Kaweco Logo. Katherine: This pen makes it obvious how much smaller my hands are. I can and do use my Kawecos unposted, both my plastic Sport (which was my only work pen for about six months) and my AL. I prefer the plastic Sport when posted though — it gives the pen a little more heft and makes it more comfortable to hold. But, my tiny hands prefer the Sport AL unposted— it feels more balanced to me. All in all, both are very usable for me, both posted and unposted. I don’t own a Sport in Brass, but I’ve tried one and found that it was usable, but heavy and my hand felt the fatigue (especially if it was posted and top heavy) after a bit of writing — usable, but I wouldn’t buy one.

For those who enjoy the durability and heft of the aluminium, the Kaweco is a good, solid upgrade. The Sport is a great starter pen, but for fans of the Kaweco Sport, the AL is an obvious choice to have to try out. You won’t regret it.

With the cap on the pen it measures just over 4 inches. The cap on the pen is quite long, 2.75 inches, and the barrel is short at 4 inches with the nib included. You can write without the cap posted but I find it much better posted. The pen is light weight for an aluminum pen and well balanced. I like the weight and feel of the pen much better than the Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen. This pen feels more substantial in my hand when I write. I guess I just like the additional weight. The Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen just seem too light for me. I own a white Sport (which will soon be doused in urushi) and a Rose Gold AL (pictured below). The Rose Gold was a special edition to Eslite, a chain of bookstores in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. To my knowledge, it’s sold out but may show up used here and there. My main criterion for whatever my ultimate choice comes down to the long term durability of the pen (like 10+ years kind of durability). The nib on the Kaweco Classic Sport fountain pen is a gold colored stainless steel nib. I like the way the nib writes and for an inexpensive steel nib it writes really well. It is not real wet but it is smooth with no hard starts or skips.
