About this deal

The enhancement of the visual quality of above-ground structures, in particular vertical ones such as pylons, is still an open issue for two main reasons: The winning T-shaped pylon is about 50 ft shorter than the traditional steel lattice structure but can still transmit 400,000 volts. The overhead power lines it carries are suspended from a diamond-shaped ‘earring’.

There are plenty of ground plans of ancient Egyptian temples available and recreating the actual buildings is not so difficult if you’re familiar with 3D CAD or other such software. Once the practise got underway with complete course marshalling the UK team done pretty well with all three pilots recording good times, the Nathan Attridge Diva was the fastest UK team model with a time of 59 seconds with Ollie and Shane close behind. All the UK team were pleased with the practise session. Starting from the structure of Figure 9, the beams are designed iteratively, with each one having a circular hollow section and slimness λ≤ 15 (following the regulations), and the structure is verified using a Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis under the most severe load condition (LC#2). Also in this case, Altair OptiStruct ® was used for the analysis. The photos were then stitched together to make one very large photograph. The actual size of the image above is nearly four meters (about 12 and half feet) wide. The smaller pylons – which carry power lines of 132kV and lower – are owned by the DNOs . They carry electricity from the substations to our homes, businesses and anywhere else that uses electricity. Custom-designed structures with an improved visual impact are recommended in key areas with high landscape interest since they should blend more effectively with the surroundings.

Each new electricity transmission network project is assessed on a case-by-case basis, with the technology we use based on planning policy and regulations set by Ofgem as well as engineering, environmental and cost considerations. Official practice started Tuesday, but it was delayed by rain. It briefly abated and the Japanese team went out first. At 11 a.m., a pounding rain squall occurred. It was hard to even hear each other inside of the big tent.Tomorrow will be the last day of the unofficial practise before the official practise starts and the competition starts for real. During the initial rounds, an error was pointed out by the British team, which found that the electronic timing system started all lanes at the same time instead of 1 second apart, as what is required. Those taking off in lanes two and three had their scores subsequently readjusted (improved). The “T-pylon” [see Frearson, 2015], which was installed in the United Kingdom in 2015 ( Figure 1A); Overhead power lines are attached to the pylons using ‘insulators’ made of materials that won’t conduct an electrical current – such as porcelain or glass. These prevent the steel towers from becoming live.

I was made aware of the picture when I read my copy of the Jesus College Cambridge annual report in which there was an article by a research fellow, Dr James Purdonabout "how the first pylons stimulated the artistic imagination of the nation". You can read it in the report here and so I won't attempt to summarise the article, but Stephen Spender ( who has featured on Pylon of the Month before) and the poet laureate Cecil Day-Lewisboth feature. I was also rather fond of another picture, Landscape with Pylons by Julian Trevelyan, mentioned in the article and shown below (image obtained from here) and the article made connections between surrealism and pylons that certainly gave me food for thought. Since the visual impact remains a subjective perception, with no objective coding available, according to Cotton and Devine-Wright (2013), citizens must be involved in designing new installations through consultation, design contests, and participatory workshops. In the last case, deliberative focus group techniques are employed to investigate the perceptions of environmental and social impacts, risks, governance arrangements, and technology choices, as in Cotton and Devine-Wright (2013). In this phase, the structure is designed with standardized and commercial components to make the product realization economical and straightforward. So final UK positions were Ollie Witt 5th, Nathan Attridge 20th and Shane Egan 24th with the UK finishing over all 4th place, this is the highest UK team placing ever. The complete design of new pylons in long-spam bridges is proposed–from conceptual to detailed design - considering functionality, ease of construction, and aesthetic properties in Li Z. et al. (2022). This work proposed the whole process to obtain the detailed design of a new long-span bridge type from the form-finding to multi-material TO. However, it did not consider the integration of the visual quality of the structures with the landscape, nor involved citizens in the development process.

Regarding high voltage power lines (HVPL), which primarily include pylons, but also conductors, protective ropes, hood, and pin insulators, the previously described approaches have been applied with positive results in the following examples:

The emphasis in the model is on scale fidelity - the only deviations are a bigger tail and more dihedral. Nevertheless, the model came out relatively light, less than 3/10 oz. Due to the cheek cowls, wheel pants, and half-shell construction, this is a somewhat complicated Peanut. If you are a beginner, or if you never built a flying scale ship before, I would not recommend the Rivets. Regular readers of this blog are probably looking at this month's pylon and wondering what is going on, but for the first pylon of 2014 I thought that it would be appropriate to feature the first artist to recognise the significance of the pylon. The picture is by Tristram Hillier and was painted in 1933. It is in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland which has this to say about it: The improvement of the visual impact of pylons and similar vertical structures is particularly critical, since they are viewed from a great distance; Ollie's grip on the top of the leader board held good and at the end of the seventh day he was still in first place, whilst Nathan and Shane were languishing in the lower half of the table and praying for no further problems.

Day three at the 2023 pylon race World Championships has once again been effected by heavy rain showers, this has seriously impacted everyone's flying on the last day of the unofficial practise. By analyzing all the new pylons mentioned in Figure 1, it is evident that, concerning the traditional ones, they aim at reducing the visual impact by attractive and sinuous shapes, but without completely adopting the guidelines in Reed (2011) and the conclusions in Devine-Wright and Batel (2013). The most important aspect overlooked is the transposition into the structure shape of the characteristic elements easily identifiable with the surroundings where they are installed; certainly, this would allow them to be better integrated with the landscape, further improving their impact.
