Description

It’s quite a twisty-turny route as it has to bypass quite a few gorges, but the effort involved is more than worth it, and visitors will have umpteen photo opportunities of Strathmore as they forge ahead through the heather-covered lower slopes. Towards the top, it gets steeper and more barren as the plants thin out and the slopes become scree-covered, and it becomes a downright scramble once you get nearer to the summit.

Despite it becoming a popular hobby to attempt to climb all the Munros listed, Sir Hugh never actually managed to complete them all himself- although he did get blinking close! Of his original list he failed to climb one mountain in theCairngorms (Carn Cloich-Mhuillin) which he was saving to be his last climb, and then on his deathbed he revised his original list to include 2 more peaks, leaving him 3 short of completing the entire list in his lifetime. Map of MunrosThat’s not a typo by the way, the Scottish Mountaineering Club still uses the spelling from the days of Hugh Munro. It’s impossible not to have heard of Ben Nevis. As children we’re taught it’s the highest mountain in Britain and as adults who love the great outdoors we aspire to climb it one day. Whilst Scottish Munros may be modest in height in comparison to some of the continental ranges, climbing them can be particularly treacherous on account of the latitude and Scottish weather. However, if you do reach the summit of pretty much any of the Munros, we can guarantee it will be worth your while as you will be rewarded with some of the most stunning views in the world! While the SMC does not use a prominence criterion for classifying a Munro, all but one of the 282 Munros below have a prominence above 30 metres (98 feet), the exception being Maoile Lunndaidh at 11 metres (36 feet); and apart from Am Basteir, all Munros have a prominence above 50 metres (160 feet). Getting to the Trossachs is a short drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh so you can easily bag this Munro on a day trip without having to book overnight accommodation. However, with such stunning scenery on your doorstep, I’d advise spending at least a couple of days in the area to explore the pretty village of Balloch, Queen Elizabeth Forest, Loch Lomond, and of course, Ben Lomond.

The Munros have been drawn in such a way that the size of each triangle gives an approximate representation of the height of the actual Munro. Each Munro is Named and Numbered Of course, you don’t have to climb every single Munro and if you’re anything like me you’ll have an amazing time just reaching the summit when and wherever you can. You’ll get to see places of extraordinary beauty that you would never otherwise see, you’ll have unforgettable encounters with wildlife, and you’ll get immense personal satisfaction from pushing yourself harder than you ever thought you were capable of. Where Are the Munros in Scotland? The SMC recognises six peaks in England, fifteen in Wales and thirteen in Ireland that would be Munros or Munro Tops if they were in Scotland. These are referred to asFurth Munros, i.e. the Munros furth of Scotland. Munros Safety Ben Lomond rivals Ben Nevis as the most-climbed peak in Scotland so don’t expect to have the place to yourself when you visit. If you set off early you’ll find it’s reasonably quiet though, and the views on the 7-mile route are nothing short of spectacular.Database of British and Irish Hills - not just Munros, Munro Tops and Murdos, but lots of hill-lists throughout the UK and Ireland. The first reported completion of all the Munros plus the Munro Tops in one continuous expedition was byChris Townsend. His trip lasted 118 days in 1996. The next stage of your climb is making sure you’ve got the correct kit, and while I’m not going to explicitly state what’s best, I’ve got a few essentials that I use which I’ll list below. It looks quite daunting from the bottom but it’s actually not too bad on close inspection, though it’s quite narrow, so if you haven’t got a head for heights you might not find it a particularly enjoyable experience. The view from the top of the ridge is nothing short of breathtaking though, with superb views out to Loch Etive and even the Isle of Mull on a clear day. Ben Vorlich and Stuc A’Chroin
