About this deal

This rig gives you possibly the best amp and guitar combination for home use and provides a full range of effect pedals to cover David’s entire career. You have access to a vibe, phaser, flanger and chorus pedal which means you can tweak each pedal and achieve the closest match to any effect you hear on early or late albums. One consideration to make is how much control you'd like over the effect. Compression can be a bit of a dark art, and really mastering it can take some time, so beginners might want want to opt for something simple that offers more of a ‘set and play’ functionality with just a few knobs, or maybe even a single one. If you know what sound you want, and you either know how to adjust the parameters to get it or you’re well up for the challenge of trying, then look for something with a few more controls on it. Do different styles of music need different compressors? David uses a MXR Dyna Comp and you can see it in his live rig photo earlier on the far left. The far blue pedal in that live rig is a BOSS CS-2 compressor. For example, a fuzz distortion pedal is crucial if you want to try and replicate his dirtier tones, but if you’re only interested in his clean tones, you can skip it. David Gilmour Guitars

Lastly, compressors work great with overdrive pedals and valve guitar amps, with the capability of hitting both with some extra decibels, encouraging some sweet breakup. Some, such as JHS's Pulp' N' Peel v4, have a dedicated dirt switch for this purpose. This pedal gives you the classic Big Muff sound that David has used throughout his career in a smaller casing. The original Big Muff is a massive pedal, so it’s nice to see a modern version with a more pedalboard-friendly size. When a compressor is used with a fuzz distortion, it smooths it out and adds some warmth. So if you currently have a fuzz distortion pedal and feel it’s too buzzy or fizzy, then adding a compressor is a great way to smooth it out.

About MXR Dyna Comp

Any songsbefore 1971 would have used a germanium fuzz face and anything after would have used a silicon fuzz face. Electro-Harmonix Nano Big Muff

First and foremost, we are musicians, and we want other players to find the right product for them. So we take into careful consideration everything from budget to feature set, ease of use and durability to come up with a list of what we can safely say are the best compressor pedals on the market right now.David’s first Fuzz Face pedal used a germanium transistor (a germanium fuzz face pedal is available here: Dunlop FFM2 Germanium Fuzz Face® Mini Distortion) and switched over to a silicon transistor in the early 70s. There’s quite a difference between a germanium and silicon based fuzz face so if in doubt, try both out at a local guitar shop to get a feel for what you prefer.

The signal is high pass filtered in parallel with C6 & R11 and C7 & R12 and the diodes D1 and D2 will protect the base of the transistor from negative voltages (the diodes are just clamping diodes that ground the base of the transistor under damaging negative voltages).

Why Should I Choose an MXR Dyna Comp Pedal?

David has used a variety of different delay units over the years and many would be hard to find today. Fortunately, the market is full of high-quality delay pedals so you have plenty of choices. Featuring a blend of analog and digital technology, the Darkglass Hyper Luminal Compressor is functional, versatile and comprehensive, and affects your bass signal in a way that’s musical and dynamic, making it one of the best bass compressor pedals out there right now. Featuring studio-quality components that you would find in an actual 1176, the Cali76 also features the familiar layout of the studio compressor. It also features a dry blend knob so that you can process your unaffected signal as well as the squashed one, which adds to the pedal’s versatility. The blue line (CA3080 positive input) level is slightly smaller (~1dB) than the negative input, it is due to a small signal bleed through the Rtrimmer and R5/R6. This OTA chip amplifies the voltage difference at its input pins:
