About this deal

I easily get sharp 45MP images hand-held at all focal lengths at 1/8 of a second with the Z7's great VR, no tripods needed! It works great at 1/4 second at the wide end. Both rings are smooth on my sample, and the build quality feels solid, a bit above that of the f/1.8G primes Nikon has made for the F-mount. The lens balances very nicely on the smallish Z bodies. Silver Maple Motel Office, October 2018, 6:35 P.M. Nikon Z7, Nikon 24-70mm f/4 Z at 48mm, f/4 hand-held at 1/13 at Auto ISO 200, Perfectly Clear v3.6. bigger. Shortest length and lightest weight among standard zoom lenses for full-frame interchangeable-lens mirrorless cameras released as of July 21, 2020.JPEG: JPEG-Baseline compliant with fine (approx. 1:4), normal (approx. 1:8), or basic (approx. 1:16) compression; size-priority and optimal-quality compression available The Z 24-70mm delivers quite pleasing bokeh overall, and is a definite improvement over the Z-mount F4 which has a very poor circle-of-confusion that can affect bokeh performance, particularly the appearance of out-of-focus highlights. Rated 5 stops improvement when used with the Nikon Z cameras. The lens itself has no internal stabilizers.

Despite the severity of what I write here about vignetting, I see similar issues with the 24-120mm f/4 lens, for example. It's clear that Nikon emphasized small lens size over using all of what the Z mount is capable of here. The 24-70mm f/4 S is the kit zoom lens for the initial Z series bodies. Much like Sony did with the original A7 and their 24-70mm f/4, Nikon has targeted a small, travel-friendly kit lens as the one of the initial zooms in their new system. Shooting in Full HD tops out at 60fps, while the Z6 can manage 120fps. Again, event though processing engine in the Z5 is identical to the one in the Z6, the severe crop and slower Full HD frame rate is down to the design of the Z5's CMOS sensor, This isn’t usually much of a concern for stills photographers, except that high transmission by definition means that there’s low reflectance and that can often result in low ghosting and flare. The Nikkor Z has exceptional transmission, but the Canon EF zoom has equally good if not very slightly better transmission levels. Variable transmission may be an issue when shooting video, but with the difference being no more than 0.1EV over the whole zoom range, it’s unlikely to be problematic. This should also be the motto of the Z5 which at first glance looks like a duplicate of the Nikon Z6. The case is also made of magnesium and is resistant to dust and splashing water. The case design and button layout are also largely unchanged. There are however technical simplifications, but which will not however put off many photographers. New sensor There is only slight breathing in this 24-70mm. At 70mm the image gets slightly smaller as focused more closely. This new Z lens has an electronic diaphragm for quiet operation and is designed also for shooting video, with little to no focus breathing (no change in image size as focused). Nikon claims it's dust and drip resistant. Fast 24-70mm lenses always come with some tradeoff, be it sharpness performance on one end or wide open, chromatic aberration performance, or some other tradeoff in aberration correction, but this Nikon lens walks a fine line in delivering sharp performance across the board, with generally well-controlled aberrations. Does it deliver prime lens performance? No, but does any 24-70/2.8? The Nikon Z 24-70m F2.8 S garners a Silver Award because it's a solid fast mid-range zoom that has no severe shortcomings that would stop us from recommending it. The same can't be said about similar offerings for other systems.
