About this deal

This pillbox guarded a local railway junction, there are other examples locally in poorer condition. Osborne, Mike (2004). Defending Britain ... twentieth century military structures in the landscape. Tempus Publishing. ISBN 0-7524-3134-X.

Many health care systems in the world require patients to physically go to the dispensary or pharmacy to refill or collect their medications. This practice has been ongoing across the globe for a long time [ 1, 2]. Marine Parade Polyclinic reopened in February after several months of upgrading work. Its size has doubled. It now has an additional storey, 28 service rooms (up from the previous 18), bigger waiting areas, x-ray services, and more age-friendly features such as low ramps, handrails, and large signs. Walk-in patients can now also call to fix appointments instead of queuing. The Transforming the Trent Valley team has been setting about helping to conserve these mini fortresses in the landscape by considering a series of sustainable conversions to repurpose the structures and give them a new relevance in the 21st century. We have been adding interpretation to some of the pillboxes in public areas to help visitors better understand their history and relevance. We have also been working with landowners to convert pillboxes for bats and birds. The type 26 also had an important prefabricated variant, in which the shuttering – both inside and out – was provided by precast concrete slabs slotted into reinforced concrete posts. The shuttering was filled with concrete in situ. [35] [36] This pillbox was also known as the 'Stent' after the company that produced the prefabricated components, Stent Precast Concrete Limited. On those examples where damage allows inspection of the construction, it seems that the concrete fill was not reinforced. [37] Ruddy, J Austin. "Auburn Sands, Coastal Crust Defences, Bridlington". Between the Abyssinian Crisis of 1936 and World War II, the British built about 200 pillboxes on the island of Malta for defence in case of an Italian invasion. [9] Fewer than 100 pillboxes still exist, and most are found on the northeastern part of the island. A few of them have been restored and are cared for, but many others were demolished. Some pillboxes are still being destroyed nowadays as the authorities do not consider them to have any architectural or historic value, [10] despite heritage NGOs calling to preserve them. Defended England 1940 (Stroud: Tempus Publishing 2006) ISBN 978-0-7524-3849-8 These small, pitch roofed pillboxes are somewhat of an enigma, there being no reference to them in any of the literature reviewed so far. So why does a stretch of the Dove Valley in Staffordshire and Derbyshire have this unique type of pillbox? They are often situated by railway bridges or by roads near railways. Is there a connection between these small rectangular pillboxes and the wartime railway network? Were some strategically placed at weak locations that were under defended when the first batch of pillboxes were built? Were these smaller pillboxes an attempt to fix this and plug the gaps in the stop line? The Type 24 Pillbox is a small fortification built during the early years of the Second World War.
