The Evangelists’ allusions to the Old Testament are characteristically “metaleptic”: “that is, they nudge the discerning reader to recognize and recover the context from which the intertextual references are drawn” (107).

Hays’s method is both straightforward and controversial. He supports his twofold thesis by walking the reader through each of the four Gospels, showing how numerous passages in each Gospel are indebted to texts and themes from the Old Testament. While readers may not be convinced that every example displays this reliance on the specific Old Testament passages that Hays identifies, the cumulative effect of seeing one example after another is impressive and helps demonstrate the potential of Hays’s thesis. 1 Reading is the process of looking at written symbols and letters and understanding the meaning of them. It's one of the four main language skills alongside listening, speaking and writing. Reading is usually the third language skill that you learn in your language - it comes after listening and speaking. If you can, add some space between the lines of text and choose a typeface that’s easy on the eye. I prefer sans-serif typefaces, but it’s really all down to personal preference. To help achieve this, I will publish a mathematics and numeracy plan before the end of term. Hays’s argument for the necessity of reading the Gospels in light of their Old Testament roots provides a helpful corrective to historical critical approaches that would insist on understanding Old Testament texts solely within their own cultural milieu. Instead, Hays argues clearly and coherently for understanding a connection between the Testaments by which the figure of Jesus is understood most fully only when set alongside of the Old Testament texts that the Gospel writers use to present him.

The behaviors Orton first described in the ‘20s are not unique to children with dyslexia: Almost all children reverse letters when they’re first learning to read and write. “It’s so common that it’s a poor way to distinguish typical from atypical reading development,” says John Gabrieli, a neuroscientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2021-22 pupils’ attainment was lower on average in Welsh reading relative to pupils in 2020-21, equivalent to 5 months’ difference on average across all year groups. In 2022/23 average attainment of pupils in Welsh reading was lower than it was in 2020-21, equivalent to 11 months’ lower attainment. If you’ve followed the other tips in this article, perhaps you’ve already fixed some errors in your work. If so, well done: each correction is a small victory. Of course, every biblical scholar (particularly in a post-holocaust era) should see supersessionism as theologically disastrous and politically dangerous, but not at the expense of denying the reality that Jesus brings the story of Israel to its climactic finale. Real discontinuity exists between the Old Covenant and the New/better Covenant. Israel is not superseded by the church, but it is fulfilled by Christ. Christ has redrawn the boundaries of Israel around himself and invites both ethnic Jews and Gentiles to partake in the fulfillment of God’s Old Covenant promises. Getting a child to pay attention while they're reading is easier said than done, however. The key is finding reading material that they're truly interested in and fascinated by.

Having this knowledge is just the first step to developing a child's reading ability though. They then have to learn how to use this knowledge to their advantage, so that they can get more out of what they read. You can support children with this by asking them inferential questions about what they've read. Fluency is a useful skill that speeds up a child’s reading and understanding of texts. It’s also important for when they encounter irregular words, like 'of' and 'the', which can’t be sounded out. This is an encouraging, intriguing, and stimulating book. Responding to the worrying findings Education Minister Jeremy Miles said literacy and numeracy was a national priority but the assessment results are “not to be used for accountability purposes at any levels”. He added that: “Neither schools nor local authorities need to make any changes as a result of the publication of this national report” and instead it would be used as a way to help learners, inform policy-making and future research.

This assessment was introduced in the 2018/19 academic year and is the only assessment for which data is available both before and after the pandemic.
