In escaping from the Bekdel Institute with River Song, Missy used her sonic umbrella to scramble the archeologist's vortex manipulator, unscrambling it only when River agreed to take the Time Lady with her. After escaping, Missy, annoyed by River, used the umbrella to set the vortex manipulator to return River to her cell in the Stormcage Containment Facility. ( AUDIO: The Bekdel Test)On the other hand, the cane used by the Eleventh Doctor to scan the Teselecta in “Let’s Kill Hitler” is rather swish and beautifully irrelevant. It is an object blessed with lots of style but comparatively little substance as a sonic tool, in that it is a cane that happens to have extra capabilities, rather than being a cane that uses its sonic powers to keep the Doctor steady. The Tenth Doctor used a yellow umbrella to defeat Glutonoid on Phijax IV. ( COMIC: The Glutonoid Menace ) The Silurians and Sea Devils both used forms of sonic discs as weapons when they awoke in 1972 and again in 2084. They had a similar larger cutting device for cutting through doors, so it’s clear their use of sonic tech far outstripped that of even the Time Lords. The Seventh Doctor initially carried his previous incarnation's multi-coloured umbrella, at one point clumsily brandishing it as a weapon against the First Rani. He left it behind upon choosing his new outfit. ( TV: Time and the Rani) Neglecting to retrieve it from the Rani's TARDIS after the events on Lakertya, he later realised that he had lost possession of it. Amy was first introduced to the series in Sonic The Hedgehog CD as a love interest, but their relationship was always implied to be unrequited. Sonic is far too busy going really fast to have a relationship. In some instances, it sounded like a sonic screwdriver ( TV: World Enough and Time / The Doctor Falls) but in some others it's sound resembled a laser screwdriver. ( AUDIO: Day of the Master) As if to further prove that point, the Paternoster Gang unveiled three sonic-related devices in “Deep Breath”. Each one was suggested by Doctor Who fans as the result of a competition in the British children’s TV show Blue Peter.The Sixth Doctor occasionally carried a bright, multi-coloured umbrella. He took it with him on a relaxing lakeside fishing trip with Peri ( TV: The Two Doctors) and whilst exploring Ravolox, where he used it in an attempt to protect himself from being stoned. ( TV: The Mysterious Planet) He had it with him when he crash-landed on Lakertya and regenerated. ( TV: Time and the Rani) The Scaroth used a sonic knife to cut through the glass case around the Mona Lisa in “City of Death.” This feels like a tool that could definitely exist, although the vibration would probably set off an alarm.
