About this deal

In Jean de Brunhoff's second Babar book, The Travels of Babar, when the married couple leave by balloon on their honeymoon: Nelvana and The Clifford Ross Company Enter into Five-Year Administration Deal". Business Wire. The Free Library. 5 November 2001 . Retrieved 2 February 2011. The book was a success. After his first foray into publishing, Jean de Brunhoff would soon be recognized as the father of the modern picture book. Thousands of children and adults in France read along as Babar struggled and triumphed. Each year de Brunhoff wrote another volume about Babar. The books were soon translated and readers in North America and England began to follow the adventures of Babar and his family. Editions le Jardin des Modes was a subsidiary of Condé Nast and to that point had never published a book that wasn’t about fashion. The parent company was dubious about Babar but since he was an instant success and they published a second edition in 1935. The French publishing house Hachette later bought the rights to the Babar series and have been publishing Babars since the early 1950s. Today the book has been translated into at least 18 languages. But to Laurent and Mathieu, the exploits of Babar were their very own. Stating, as it is sometimes done, that the city is Paris is wrong. No recognizable building of Paris or, for that matter, any other larger town is shown in any of the drawings. Since Babar flees by foot, the city would presumably be located in Africa, anyway, although its population (as it is drawn) is exclusively white. In our latest book – Elephant and the Lost Blanket – Elephant takes her special blue blanket with her everywhere. It’s her favourite thing in the whole world. So when it goes missing in the park one day, Elephant is desperate to find it. Her friends come to the rescue and help her search, but all is not as it seems...

Just then a small dog passed by ... "I am good at finding lost things. Now, do you see that girl over there wheeling a doll in a pram ..."On and on from one to the other until Babar's search for Santa eventually bears fruit after a few adventures along the way. There's a large picture of Santa's cave near the end and it shows all the different rooms where the Great Man works and sleeps. Then comes a marvellous surprise for the inhabitants of Célesteville when Santa Claus honours them with a visit and befriends everyone. The spirit of Christmas brings this tale to a close with all the trimmings which include a glittering tree, plenty of presents and a wonderful party. Spats were included in the clothes that Babar bought for himself before he went to tea with his lady friend. People wore spats many years ago — at least men did I believe. They were a kind of covering that went round the top of one's shoes and I always thought they were there to protect footwear from mud. I wore them for one period only when I was a soldier of the 1930s and I remember wondering at the time why a man of the army would need to protect his boots from mud. It seems as if spats are mainly used for ceremonial purposes nowadays but in my case I was with a group who were battling King Kong and that couldn't in any way be classed as a 'ceremonial' instance so I still don't exactly know the true purpose of spats except perhaps to hide shoe laces and make footwear look more presentable. Uncle Scrooge was big on spats! Use the message template and help your child write a message to Elmer from the other elephants. Talk about what they might want to say to him letting them choose their own message. Children might want to say for example that they like him just the way he is or that they find him really funny. An animated television series, Babar was produced in Canada by Nelvana Limited and the Clifford Ross Company, originally running from 3 January 1989 to 5 June 1991, with 65 episodes. An additional 13 episodes aired in 2000. The character has also appeared in a number of films. The first two of Jean de Brunhoff's Babar books have inspired two major concert works: L'Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant ( The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant) by Francis Poulenc in 1940; and The Travels of Babar (Le Voyage de Babar) by Raphael Mostel in 1994. [13] [14] In 2010, a sequel and spin-off, Babar and the Adventures of Badou, was released, introducing new characters, including Badou, Babar's grandson and Pom's son. It takes place several years after the original series.Woolery, George W. (1989). Animated TV Specials: The Complete Directory to the First Twenty-Five Years, 1962-1987. Scarecrow Press. pp.397–398. A tall and attractive man, Jean’s personality revealed his handsomeness was more than skin deep. Jean was tactful, friendly and natural. He was especially attentive to his youngsters. At a very young age Laurent and Mathieu learned to ski in Vermala, staying in the French Swiss ski resort for several months every winter. The family split their time between their skiing holidays, their apartment in Neuilly, in Paris’ northwest, and Cécile de Brunhoff’s parents’ walled mansion near the Marne. Free from the worry of school schedules, the boys continued their education through correspondence lessons. It was a blissful time. The four enjoyed a comfortable life. Jean de Brunhoff wrote and illustrated seven Babar books; the series was continued by his son, Laurent de Brunhoff. [25] Mehren, Elizabeth (24 December 1989). A statue of Babar’s wise and wrinkly mentor Cornelius is located at the elementary school named for him. Opened in 1994 by Laurent and Mathieu de Brunhoff, it also contains a room named after Babar’s queen Celeste. Milne introduced an English-language version, The Story of Babar, in Britain and the United States. [11]

The in-laws’ Editions le Jardin des Modes bought l’Histoire de Babar in 1931 the year after it was written. They reproduced the art and handwritten script exactly as they were in de Brunhoff’s large format notebook. At 10 ¾ x 14 ½ inches the book itself was elephantine. Its sheer size made it and all subsequent books memorable and unique objects.

Before his death in 1937, Jean de Brunhoff published six more stories. His son Laurent de Brunhoff, also a writer and illustrator, carried on the series from 1946, beginning with Babar et Le Coquin d'Arthur. [12] Laurent de Brunhoff’s stories led Babar farther afield – to distant planets, the underground world and America. In 2002 Babar demonstrated a series of asanas in Babar’s Yoga for Elephants. Laurent has created well over 30 Babar stories and now lives in Key West, Florida. The 'Song of the Elephants' is very strange. Cornelius the oldest pachyderm was asked what the words meant but he said they were so ancient that nobody knows the meaning of them now but it's the tune the elephants have always sung. As Babar stories are translated from the French, perhaps there's more understanding of the strange poem in countries where people speak the language but I doubt it. Some of the words end in 'i' and 'Pepino' in the second verse sounds quite Italian so maybe that's another avenue. There's also the word 'pata' which might have some primeval Indian connection but I can't imagine where the original author found the word 'Prjmnestwe'. Now into his nineties Laurent has carried on the tradition of Babar for seven decades. His gentle mother Cécile died in 2003 just a few months shy of her 100 th birthday. She never remarried. Perhaps she couldn’t forget. Mindscape released Babar and the Royal Coin Caper for the PC in 2005, Both Babar and Cornelius are voiced by Daniel Davies and Dave Pender. The Danish game company The Game Factory published Babar to the Rescue for the Game Boy Advance in 2006. Since 2001, the Babar franchise has been owned by Corus Entertainment's Nelvana in conjunction with the artist, Clifford Ross.
