The L'étranger series ( Japanese: エトランゼシリーズ, Hepburn: Etoranze Shirīzu, lit. "Stranger series") [3] [4] is a Japanese boys' love (BL) manga series written and illustrated by Kanna Kii. The first book, L'étranger de la Plage ( 海辺のエトランゼ, Umibe no Etoranze, also titled Seaside Stranger or The Stranger by the Shore in the English versions), was serialized in the bimonthly manga magazine On BLUE from 2013 to 2014. It was followed up with a sequel series, L'étranger du Zéphyr ( 春風のエトランゼ, Harukaze no Etoranze, lit. "Stranger in the Spring Breeze"). L'étranger de la Plage has been published in English by the digital distribution platform Renta! under the title The Stranger by the Beach, and by Seven Seas Entertainment under the title Seaside Stranger. An anime film adaptation produced by Studio Hibari premiered on September 11, 2020.

L'étranger de la Plage is written and illustrated by Kanna Kii, and it is her debut manga work. [1] It was serialized in the bimonthly manga anthology On BLUE from 2013 to 2014. The chapters were later released in one bound volume by Shodensha under the Feel Comics On BLUE imprint. The manga is distributed in English by Renta! under the title The Stranger by the Beach. [10] In December 2020, Seven Seas Entertainment announced that it had acquired the license to the series for release in July 2021 under the title Seaside Stranger: Umibe no Étranger. Shun is a quiet novelist who, despite having known his sexuality before Mio, still hasn't come to terms with it. Mio on the other hand is young, carefree, and is comfortable with openly confessing his love to Shun. They balance each other out. Mio learns from Shun's family situation, while Shun learns from Mio that he shouldn't be embarrassed about their love. There is nothing wrong with expressing feelings for someone of the same gender or sex. And Shun, having lived his life with this affecting him, comes to terms for the first time, that, this is how he is, and that's perfectly okay. Despite having a rather simplistic concept, it actually seemed somewhat promising at the start. It initially felt like the story was

I went into this with high expectations, thinking it seemed like a promising Shounen Ai story that would actually focus on a realistic depiction of a intimate relationship between two fairly ordinary boys. My disappointment may have been partially the fault of my own high expectations, but nevertheless, "Umibe no Étranger" turned out to be a surprisingly frustrating read. I will try to give a good amount of objective criticism, but I will also be including subjective opinion in the "Enjoyment" section. It felt like the story was all over the place and half the time I had no idea what was happening. I felt like the relationship between Shun and Mio is quite stunted. Granted their relationship in the first place is strange and almost forced. Now, for what I am head over heels for - the sound (by Eiko Morikawa) and original music (composed by Mina Kubota). None of the sound effects felt out of place - the blowing wind and stretching sea made the setting even more immersive. And what takes the cake is the music. Beautiful piano pieces, that, whenever they started playing during a scene I would focus on them instead because I didn't expect them to be so... good. Mina Kubota did an amazing job with the music. The ending song is equally addicting; it is all I imagined a song representing Mio and Shun to be. This attitude also goes towards the voice actors, who did a great job with bringing these two to life (along with Sakurako, Eri, Suzu, and most particularly a young version of Mio, who actually had a child voice acting him).
