The Captains really are a true goodyear welt boot, and feel slightly heavier and more substantial as a result. Long-Term Thinking
It’s worth emphasizing that it isn’t, as I incorrectly noted in the video above, another strip of leather. In boots like the Red Wing Iron Ranger, another layer of leather is added on top of the end of the boot to offer a little more protection, however the Captain’s toecap is two pieces of leather stitched together, as opposed to on top of one another. I wouldn’t really emphasize the protectiveness, but this does add a bit more structure to the toe. Toe caps can also sometimes make small feet look smaller, so if that’s a concern then you might want to consider the plain toe President. With a Goodyear welted boot, you can resole it as many times as you want, which means that your boots technically could last you a lifetime if you really wanted to spare the expense of several recrafts. The President is a plain toe boot. As for me, I’ve been wearing these boots several times a week for over five years. Even when they were soaked through in a snowstorm and had to be dried next to the fireplace ( really tough on leather) these held up. The sole held up for four years for me, and then I took them to a cobbler and had a new sole put on. Thursday Boots are definitely durable. My first pair of Thursday Captain boots lasted four years before I resoled them, and I’ve had them for an additional year since then. They’re still going strong. Sure, those studs might not be quite as “classic” as a smooth leather sole, but it’s grippier while remaining pretty low profile. One other thing all of these vloggers kept mentioning was how Thursday Boot Co.’s direct-to-consumer model allowed them to offer good quality products at a great price point. While I’ve worn the sh*t out of these things over the past few weeks, the real test will be whether they perform as well over the long haul.
