About this deal

Multi-device throughput should see a significant throughput increase, due to multi-user MIMO and OFDMA. OFDMA is a technology borrowed from LTE cellular modems. It’s main impact on Wi-Fi is that it breaks up a wireless channel into smaller Resource Units (RU), and each RU can be assigned to a specific client. There are up to 9 clients per 20 MHz channel, and up to 36 users per 80 MHz channel. Clients can also request and use multiple RUs at once if they need more bandwidth. Early implementations of OFDMA were tested by SmallNetBuilder, and he found no discernible benefits. For this review, I have done some speed and signal strength tests with the new and old Unifi Lite and Long Range access points. I wanted to compare the new and old models in a normal use-case scenario. One of the advantages of WiFi 6 is that it allows devices to use the same WiFi channels by breaking up the channel into smaller groups (Resource Units). This way more devices can communicate at the same time. Other improvements are MU-MIMO in both downlink and uplink direction, Target Wait Time, Dynamic fragmentation, and more. For the best results, directly connect to the “server” to the same switch as the access points are connected on.

The U6 LR unsurprisingly has the best performance (speed and range) across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, thanks to the highest signal strength and 4×4 MIMO on all bands. These same improvements are also mentioned on firmware version 5.60.1, which is the most current release candidate as of May 2021. I haven’t re-run these tests with that version yet. The rate of overhead varies with modulation and coding rate. With a strong signal, less redundancy is needed, and throughput improves. It’s always a tradeoff between redundancy/integrity and throughput. They are capable of even higher throughputs when using multiple clients (or multiple threads) or if you have a client with a WiFi 6 3×3 adapter, for example.

But if you happen to be a first-time buyer into the Ubiquiti ecosystem or someone who is expanding out their existing setup, going with the new releases is certainly as compelling of a starting point as you’ll find from the brand. What I found interesting to see is that we can see a significant improvement between the Unifi 6 Lite and the old model. But between the U6 LR and the old Long Range model I didn’t. With no obstructions, you will see a 6 dB drop in signal strength every time you double your distance from the router. Having first gone live at the tail end of 2020, the latest access points from UniFi arrived to mark the notable introduction of Wi-Fi 6. As the first offerings from the brand to support the new standard, there was and still is quite a bit of hype around their release. But before we dive into seeing if Ubiquiti actually delivered or not, let’s take a moment to rehash the specs.

Upstairs I have placed the U6 lite and measured the speed from my office. Between the access point and my office are two drywalls. This ensures fast and reliable wireless connections, making it ideal for data-intensive tasks and high-density environments where network performance is crucial. Versatile 2.4 GHz Band

For the final test to compare the new Unifi Wifi 6 access points I measured before and after replacing the access points at the locations I use the wireless network the most. Both access points don’t come with a PoE adapter, so make sure you have a switch that can deliver the PoE to your access points. Testing the new access points All these improvements really benefit the performance and battery lifetime of your devices. Keep in mind though that your clients need to support WiFi 6 to fully benefit from these new features. It is considered a prosumer product line in that it supports features that are found more commonly at the enterprise-level but at a more affordable price. When we look at the signal strength we see again a great improvement between the lite models and only a minimal to no improvement between the long-range models. Unifi 6 Speed increase after replacing the access points Memory: 249340K/262144K available (7001K kernel code, 628K rwdata, 824K rodata, 1260K init, 243K bss, 12804K reserved, 0K cma-reserved, 0K highmem) I just wanted to compare the old access points with the new Unifi WiFi 6 access points in a real world scenario. Let’s first start with the size of the new access points. The new lite access point, the U6 Lite, has now the same size as the nanoHD. This means that you can use the covers from the nanoHD on the new U6 lite which is great when it comes to placing the access point insight.
