Abus’ sizing chart is unusual in that the small and medium sizes overlap heavily – 51-55cm and 52-58cm respectively – and the large is entirely separate at 59-61cm. With a 56cm head, the medium fitted well, with room for adjustment either way. The helmet sat low on my head in a way that felt aerodynamic even if I don’t have data to prove it. Abus developed Forced Air Cooling Technology. This is an interconnected ventilation system with 11 entry vents and 13 exit vents. The Abus AirBreaker is a great helmet for road bikers that value high performance and have high demands. The helmet excels in aerodynamics, comfort, ventilation and safety. It’s for good reason that Valverde became world champion with this helmet! Safety comes courtesy of something Abus calls ActiCage, which is a structural reinforcement integrated into the EPS of the helmet. Unfortunately, this doesn't follow the industry trend of offering greater rotational impact protection to mitigate concussion in the event of a crash. Abus Airbreaker helmet overall
The Airbreaker uses Abus’ ActiCage Lite crash protection system, which features an in-moulded construction with a plastic outer shell and an expanded polystyrene – EPS – liner. In-moulding is pretty standard but Abus claims to go further with structural reinforcement integrated directly into the EPS. The AirBreaker is made in Italy and sells for 250€, in three sizes S, M & L. It comes in around 10 different standard color options (including this hi-vis neon yellow), plus special Movistar & World Champion stripe editions too. The US version doesn’t appear to be available just yet, but we expect it to make it stateside later this year.
It fits perfectly to your liking, very comfortable and light, you forget almost immediately that you are wearing it, this is the best thing that a helmet should transmit, that you do not remember it during your routes. In contrast, the fastening tapes, at first glance and touch, do not stop me from the level of quality and price of the helmet, and the area of the closure and adjustment is somewhat delayed and very close to the throat, if you are one of those who like wear it tight, annoying lowering your head, you have to loosen it. Overall, the Abus AirBreaker is a great helmet that offers superb ventilation at a very light weight. It's priced towards the top end of the market but the quality is excellent.
