We love the shape of this bottle, as it’s completely unique and we’re yet to see another gin (or spirit) with a bottle like this. Fun fact: the bottle design was inspired by an old Victorian hip flask found at Notting Hill Market!] Look how cool this bottle is! We love the stopper and the interesting distilling technique on the label … Distilled since the 1870s, Tanqueray is now produced at Camron Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland, one of Europe's largest distilleries. What's most amazing is that this four times distilled gin uses just four botanicals: juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, and licorice. Martin Miller's is a modern take on traditional gin. It has that wonderful juniper dominance of a London dry and it is perfectly balanced, crisp, clean and simply an extravagant gin.

There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray's crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price. In short, the phrase "London dry" means that the spirit must be distilled in a column still to at least 70 percent alcohol by volume (A.B.V.). Natural botanicals can be added to the resulting neutral spirit only through re-distillation, but any additions after distillation beyond water and a little bit of sugar disqualify the gin from being considered a London dry. Hayman's Old Tom Gin is one of the best examples of this old-world style, though it was only recently launched in 2007. Produced by Hayman Distillers of Witham, England, it is based on a family recipe from the 1870s. Distilled in Cheshire, England, Bombay Sapphire's full list of vapor-infused botanicals include juniper, almond, grains of paradise, lemon peel, licorice, orris root, angelica, coriander, cassia bark, and cubeb berries. It's old meets new with this gin. While the brand is relatively young, having launched in 1987, the beautiful array is based on a recipe from 1761. Once a one-bottle brand, Aviation has expanded its portfolio to include Aviation Old Tom. It's the distillery's take on an old, sweeter style of gin, but they don't add sugars or flavorings, which is customary. Aviation American Gincame to market in 2006. It was one of the first brands to launch that made everyone rethink the definition of gin. It was at the forefront of the New Western Gin movement, featuring a softer juniper profile and gins that are often handcrafted in small batches. This gin revolution has brought the spirit's appeal to a wider audience of drinkers. Aviation's choice of a rye base gives this gin a creamier mouthfeel than most gins. It is a gin that you can enjoy chilled on its own, which is great news for super dry martini fans. London Dry: The leading gin style, which derives its name from its city of origin but does not dictate where a gin has to be made. To be London Dry, a gin's flavorings must be added during distillation, and no synthetic flavorings can be used. Nothing may be added after it's distilled except water to dilute the gin to the desired proof.Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. London Dry Gin: The old guard brands mostly distill London Dry-style gin in the UK, although it does not actually have a geographical indicator. The main rules of this designation are that juniper must be the dominant flavor (as it is for all gin) and botanicals must flavor the gin during distillation, with no flavor or color added afterwards. Brands like Beefeater and Tanqueray are classics for a reason, but the world of gin has expanded enormously over the past 20 years as new distilleries tinker with the formula. This classic, juniper-forward gin offers a crisp, clear taste that forgoes most sweetness in favor of a more woodsy palate. Translation: It’s basically like sipping on a Christmas tree. Navy Strength If you have yet to taste genever, it is unlike any other gin you've had. This style of gin is as if a soft Scotch whisky were married with gin, and Bols' malty feel is a perfect example. Based on Lucas Bols' original recipe from 1820, it has a wonderful balance of sweet malt and subdued juniper and citrus. It is triple distilled using equal parts malt wine and neutral grain spirits that are infused with natural flavors.

Aviation is produced in Portland, Oregon, by House Spirits Distillery. It is distilled from neutral grain spirit with 100 percent rye base, an unusual beginning in the gin market. It's flavored with juniper, anise seed, Elettaria cardamom, coriander, lavender, sweet orange peel, and sarsaparilla. It, too, is slightly overproofed, bottled at 42 percent ABV (84 proof), so it's not as delicate as it's often made out to be. Gin is a complicated spirit. Namely, a lot of things (called botanicals) go in to it. But you can't have a gin without the notorious juniper berry. Unlike bourbon, there are not many legal requirements for something to be considered gin. There's no minimum juniper berry ratio, no definitive base recipe, or leading gin authority. Merriam-Webster defines gin as "a colorless alcoholic beverage made from distilled or redistilled neutral grain spirits flavored with juniper berries and aromatics." So yeah, gin is complex because gin can be basically anything as long as it tastes a bit like juniper berries.
