As well as the obvious difference in size between the two cameras, there are a few other notable variations. Whereas the rear screen of the EOS 700D is articulated, the EOS 100D has a fixed monitor, which helps to reduce the size of the body. Meanwhile, the EOS 700D has a maximum shooting rate of 5fps compared to the 4fps rate of the EOS 100D. Speed: 30-1/4000 sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode) The diminutive design should appeal to people who might otherwise choose a compact system camera (CSC). However, much of the benefit is lost once the sizeable kit lens is attached. This new 18-55mm lens bears an STM suffix (which stands for STepping Motor) to denote its improved performance in live view mode, and smoother, quieter focusing during video capture. Auto Lighting Optimizer performs in-camera processing to even out the contrast and correct brightness. There are 4 different settings - Off, Low, Standard and Strong. Off

With a variation on the 18-million-pixel sensor that has been used in a number of Canon EOS cameras, there was nothing too surprising about the images produced by the EOS 100D. Although the Canon EOS 100D’s 63-segment evaluative metering appears underwhelming compared to the 425-pixel RGB metering sensor of the Nikon D3200, it is in no way a compromise. Using the evaluative metering mode when shooting landscapes in bright sunlight, the Canon EOS 100D produced nice bright images. True, some highlight detail was blown out in images of bright clouds saved as JPEG files, but all this lost detail could be recovered in raw images. Take complete creative control of your images with PIXMA and imagePROGRAF PRO professional photo printers. The new EOS 100D / Digital Rebel SL1 is the smallest DSLR camera that Canon have ever made. Measuring 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing just 407g, it sits between the EOS M compact system camera and the EOS 700D in both size and price. Despite its tiny dimensions, the control layout will be instantly familiar to anyone who's used a mid-range Canon DSLR before, commendably offering most of the external controls that the previous generation EOS 650D offered. The Canon EOS 100D is a new mini-DSLR from Canon, designed to fit between the Canon EOS 600D and Canon EOS 700D, as smaller option for those looking for a Digital SLR. Featuring a similar specification to the Canon EOS 650D, with an 18 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Hybrid AF focus, full HD video and 4fps continuous shooting, the camera is 25% smaller, and 28% lighter than the 650D, with every component made smaller. Canon EOS 100D Features

Scene intelligent auto, creative auto, auto, program, aperture priority, shutter priority, manual, 10 scene modes We still get a nicely chunky and stiff feel shooting mode dial with 12 settings, which is ergonomically encircled by an on/off lever that also provides a third setting for the Full HD video mode; as this option isn't included on the actual dial.

Without a doubt, a camera needs to be ergonomic so that a photographer can enjoy snapping photos effortlessly. As such, the Canon EOS 100D DSLR camera has been designed with such emphasis in mind. Not only that, it is really a wonder that this Canon DSLR camera can boast a smaller body. Thanks to its smaller design, it becomes extremely comfortable and convenient to carry and use this Canon camera to snap pictures without any fuss. Since most DSLR cameras are bulky and can be unwieldy, the Canon EOS 100D DSLR camera proves to be an attractive choice as it is considered to be an extremely portable option that gives you greater freedom in snapping pictures around. Hardy & Handy For a DSLR that is so small, the optical viewfinder seems surprisingly large. As we would expect for a camera at this level, it doesn’t offer 100% field of view, but the 95% coverage is reasonable, as is the 0.87x magnification. The viewfinder is also bright and clear. In terms of build quality, the Canon EOS 100D / SL1 certainly feels solid enough for a consumer-grade DSLR, although as you'd perhaps expect not in the same league as the semi-professional EOS 60D and 7D models. Like all of Canon's APS-C digital SLR cameras, the EOS 100D / SL1 is compatible with the manufacturer's entire line-up of lenses, including both EF and EF-S glass. When changing lenses, EF lenses need to be aligned with the red dot on the lens mount, whereas EF-S lenses must be aligned with the white square. The out-of-camera JPEGs are quite soft and at the default sharpening setting and benefit from some further sharpening in a program like Adobe Photoshop. You can also change the in-camera sharpening level to suit your tastes via the Picture Style options. Given that the light was very dim and AF assist was switched off, the drop in accuracy was forgivable, especially given the camera’s price and target market. The rear features a capacitive 3inch touch-screen, with 1040k dot resolution, that can be used to browse menus and settings as well as used as a touch shutter to set the focus point.

Based on the CIPA Standard and using the batteries and memory card format supplied with the camera, except where indicated The new STM kit lens makes a big difference for video capture. Whereas previous EOS cameras’ videos were spoiled by violently clunky autofocus, with the 100D and 18-55mm STM lens it glided smoothly and silently. It could still be a little slow to respond when we adjusted the autofocus point with the touchscreen, but it’s good enough for casual use, and the shallow depth of field gives a luxurious film-like quality to clips. Keen videographers will appreciate full manual exposure control, including silent exposure adjustments via the touchscreen during recording. Priority modes are unavailable for video, though, and moiré interference across repeating textures make this camera less than ideal for serious video work. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-G6 is much less susceptible to moiré, and also exhibits crisper details in videos. Canon EOS 100 review: Verdict There are a number of drive modes available on the Canon EOS 100D / SL1. These include Single Shot, Continuous Shooting, Self-timer and Remote Controlled Shooting. In Continuous Shooting mode, the camera can take pictures at a speed of 4 frames per second for up to 28 Large Fine JPEGs or 7 raw files, a slower rate than the 650D, but for more images.

Canon EOS 100D (Rebel SL1) Lens test images

Overall, image quality is perfect for the fair-weather photographer. For those that like to shoot in low light, the Canon EOS 100D does seem to struggle at higher sensitivities, and time will have to be spent editing the raw files to get the best from the camera.
