A central heating system running efficiently and proportionate to your heating need is the best way to heat your home and keep your bills down. Cheaper electric heaters tend to have fewer features than more expensive ones. Compared with more expensive ones, a cheap heater is less likely to have: A programmable timer, that lets you set specific times the heater will switch on. Some cheap electric heaters do have 24-hour timers that will switch the heater on at the same time every day, but some pricier heaters have digital timers that can be set to switch on at various times throughout the week.

On average, most electric heaters run at a maximum output of 2kW. In other words: if you run your 2kW electric heater at full blast for one hour, you'll be paying around 55p. For just half an hour, it'll cost you around 27p.

Cranking the central heating up to full blast sounds like a dream, but at what cost to your energy bill amid the cost of living crisis which is forcing households to get creative in an attempt to keep homes and bodies warm. This oil-filled radiator really is mini - it's not much bigger than some of the smallest heaters we've tested.

The oil in the radiator acts as a heat reservoir, which stays hot for some time after the heater's switched off. Some are called 'oil-free' and function in a comparable way, just with an internal heating element instead of any oil.

Portable electric heaters use electricity, which costs 28.62p/kWh under the current energy price cap. Depending on how effective the heater is, they can take anything from 30 minutes to an hour to notably raise the temperature of a medium-sized room, so if you're only planning on using it until the room gets up to temperature, it will likely cost you between 28 and 57p. Nearly all have some kind of carry handle for moving about and many have a safety cut-out feature, which will switch off the heater if it gets dangerously hot.
