About this deal

Clynelish distillery got my attention last September when we held a Compass Box tasting with our local whisky society. The quality of the tasting was so good and Clynelish was the base to many of Compass Box’s quality products, that it got me thinking: I have to get some Clynelish single malts. It’s an excellent choice for those who appreciate bourbon and want to explore the world of Single Malts while still enjoying some familiar flavors.

Clear worts and long ferments start the process, while distillation involves maximising copper conversation –unusually, but not uniquely, Clynelish’s spirit stills are larger than its wash stills. When tasted, the peat is immediately present but not overwhelming, followed by flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and a subtle touch of oak. The Classic Malts of Scotland series was first introduced in 1988 and sought to highlight six different distillery expressions differentiated by their regional style. The line-up changed slightly over the years (the original United Distiller’s selection was: Dalwhinnie 15 year old, Talisker 10 year old, Cragganmore 12 year old, Oban 14 year old, Lagavulin 16 year old and Glenkinchie 12 year old), but until relatively recently the essence of the series has been approximately the same as when it was conceived: well-regarded, well-priced, entry-level bottlings from a range of generally better-known distilleries. An ideal starting point.

The foreshots and feints from the spirit still are collected in a receiver and then briefly added to the low wines in the spirit still charger. Because of the comparatively long time the liquid sits in the low wines and foreshots and feints tanks prior to being mixed to create the spirit still charge, you get a build-up of waxiness.” Douglas Murray, Diageo’s Process Development Manager

Quinta Ruban hits with oak, accompanied by almond, caramel, and espresso coffee notes that create a pleasant aroma. Nose: Classic zesty, waxy and mineral aromas, accompanied by toffee and honey, melted butter on toast and a whiff of marshmallows. Whiff of orange peel and green grapes. Undeniably Clynelish.

The finish is satisfyingly long and lingers on the palate, leaving a taste of oak, plums, tobacco, and clove. The flavor is dominated by honey and vanilla, with additional hints of ripe fruit and a subtle touch of tobacco. It’s especially the waxiness that make Clynelish stand apart. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, just get your hands on a bottle of Clynelish 14 Years (it’s worth it), and you’ll recognise the flavour profile I’m referencing soon enough. It’s a characteristic that seems to have been much more prevalent in earlier eras, but something you’ll rarely encounter in modern single malts, Clynelish being one of the few exceptions.

Where does Clynelish’ waxiness come from? Well, there’s actually a pretty in-depth explanation in a book called Whisky Opus by Gavin D. Smith and Dominic Roskrow. Finish: Medium in length, with slight pepperiness, salted caramel and some hints of candied lemon peels. It’s an ideal option for everyday sippers and represents an upgrade from younger Aberlour expressions, as it has a more refined and substantial profile. The finish is lengthy, with a continuation of dark chocolate notes and a hint of berries, pleasantly accompanied by a barely noticeable warmth.
