About this deal

Finish wise I am quite surprised at the length of the finish. That said it does lose quite a lot of the flavour, especially the fruitier notes. Diablesse Caribbean Rum does become slightly bitter towards the end and is dominated a little by the oak. That said at 40% ABV, this never feels too boozy or uneven. As a sipper, maybe it could do with an extra bit of ABV but all in all its not a bad little tot of rum.

The first rum is an 8 year old Barbados rum from Foursquare distillery. Making rum since 1820 and the oldest in Barbados, this family owned distillery is presided over by a passionate, fourth-generation, master distiller. Using locally produced sugar cane molasses the traditional pot & column still distillation techniques are still used to this day to produce a light, golden rum full of flavour. Brothers said as consumer demand for innovative flavours continues to increase, cherry is trending up 32% in the categories of strongest and future flavours to watch (source: Doehler Alcoholic Flavour trends 2021).

The new rum is also bottled to be more sustainable Diablesse said, using 65% recycled glass (30% more than most bottles), which is much lighter, resulting in a better carbon footprint. All the rums in the blend have been aged in ex-bourbon casks and there is no finish or extra maturation provided to the rums at any stage. So what we are getting is a very clean, very traditional blend of what many might see as Navy rums. Unlike Navy rums such as Lambs there is no caramel colouring or additives in this particular blend. Diablesse Caribbean rum is bottled at 40% ABV. There are a number of expert master distillers who are women but we don't tend to see that through the branding or through their story. Presentation wise, Diablesse is a very well branded rum with a very clear presentation. The stubby rounded bottles have very distinctive and very striking designs and the branding is very strong. Diablesse isn’t a word that I’ve come across before so this meant searching for information on this brand was really easy. You aren’t going to get this rum confused with any others on the shelves. There aren’t many Spiced Rums that go to the trouble of giving you a chunky cork stopper. Cotswolds Distillery founder Dan Szor said: “We’re excited to launch our limited series of single cask expressions this year. These unique expressions will be released a few times each year in small batches at cask strength and show off our rich and fruity spirit at its pinnacle. For this release, we have aged our spirit for full term maturation in a single first-fill cask which has previously held the Portuguese fortified wine of Madeira, resulting in a deliciously sweet single malt whisky.”

This pure blend has no added sugar, caramel or other adulteration and is tropically aged in American Oak ex-bourbon barrels to give an added rich depth of flavour. We tasted, sipped& sampled some of the very best rums in the world, a great privilege and an even greater learning curve. A busy year followed, experimenting with many blends and new flavours, and after a great deal of trial & error ( a great deal!) our very first bottlings were introduced to the world in January 2019. Such an incredibly proud moment! 2022 saw another new arrival and so our journey continues… Diablesse Caribbean Rum. This is the second rum from the Diablesse brand, that I have reviewed recently. At present the two rums are their full portfolio. The balance is also lent a hand by the Barbados element which keeps everything together. It doesn’t let the DDL or the Jamaican elements run away with the show. Cleo says she is actively working to change the landscape of a predominantly male rum industry after seeing a distinct gap in the market for a rum that represented female inclusivity.

So where to start? The most logical place for this amazing mission had to be the Caribbean, the birthplace of rum and home to some of the best distilleries in the world. Rum is going through a renaissance with more independent, artisan rum producers appearing, as they did with gin. The public are becoming more curious as to how it’s made and what’s actually in it and this is driving the craft rum revolution. Diablesse achieves this by disappearing, using magic to confuse the men, who then run scared around the forest until they fall to their death or are eaten by the many predators in the forest. Sounds a bit like a few of my ex girlfriends……. Palate: Really fruity, banana, butterscotch, fruitcake, tropical fruit, nice sharpness, warm, peppery oak on mid-palate.

The Caribbean Golden Rum is a a 3 year old Guyanese Demerara rum, DIAMOND DISTILLERY: Located on thebanks of the Demerara River, thisdistillery wasestablished in1670 andmakes itsrums using molasses produced by thelocal sugar factory from 100% Demerara sugar. This rum isproduced in thewooden Enmore Coffey still built in1832 – theonly one of its kind in theworld still operating today. This rum adds anatural sweetness to theblend. The nose is quite funky with lots of banana cake, pineapple and some nice dunder like notes. Bit of pencil shavings an some light nail varnish (is there such a thing?). Cleo, who has a long-time partner and a ten-year-old son, Frankie, gets her special recipe rum blended and produced by a local bottler in Chorley. The name for her rums comes from a legendary story about a Caribbean seductress who enticed men into a forest, never to be seen again. It’s really nice and stands up well to the diet cola. The aroma remains of Ginger Cake and Clementine/Marmalade. Again its ridiculously easy to drink like this. It also works really nicely with lemonade and even with tonic. Rum and Tonic is becoming a bit of a thing. I like the fact you can still get some of the sweet raisin notes from the Demerara rum used in the blend The second rum is a 3 year old Guyanese Demerara rum from Diamond Distillery located on the banks of the Demerara River, this distillery was established in 1670 and makes its rums using molasses produced by the local sugar factory from 100% Demerara sugar. This rum is produced in the wooden Enmore Coffey still built in 1832 - the only one of its kind in the world still operating today. This rum adds a natural sweetness to the blend.

In the glass we have a very bright vibrant liquid, almost orange in appearance with a red hue. The nose is not what I was expecting. It’s rich and warming rather than full of orange/clementine. The clementine aromas are more like clementine peel. Sweet marmalade. This blends nicely with a real rich blend of spices. Christmas Cake, Ginger Cake, a touch of chilli spice. A slightly Asian feel to the aromas with the star anise. Diablesse Rum, an independent female-owned rum brand based in Manchester, has launched the first coconut and hibiscus rum, which is also the first to naturally pink in colour.
