This pedal is called the Golden Horse Overdrive. The Golden Horse is a well-made pedal for the price and compares very favorably to the “Clone Centaur,” which is no longer in production. Much like the Clone Centaur, the top end has been slightly attenuated, giving you a slightly warmer/darker sound than the original. There is still plenty of top-end available in this pedal, so no need to worry about that. Build quality wise the Golden Horse has a well-constructed case and potentiometers. There’s nothing to complain about with the TTone Golden Horse. For the price, it will be considered by many the best value for money Klone out there. 5. The Joyo Tauren R-01 This is the best affordable USA Made pedal. If I had to recommend one boutique Klon on this list, it would be the Chellee Ponyboy. This takes the Klon effect in a slightly different direction.

The original Centaur took up a beastly amount of pedalboard space, and the KTR (manufactured by Klon’s inventor Bill Finnegan himself, but contracted out to make it compatible with mass production) features a smaller footprint. A toggle was added to switch between true or buffered bypass. Some say it doesn’t compare to the original, but considering it was built by Finnegan himself, the KTR is the closest to the Centaur a pedal can get, according to its creator, who – by the way – thinks it sounds exactly the same. One of the newest, affordable, three-knob klones from a reliable builder. It keeps things simple, compact, and – what’s important – delivers authentic tones.These modifications retain the integrity of the original Klon tones while giving you a few extra tone shaping abilities A version of the popular Archer with six graphic EQ sliders instead of a tone knob, developed by guitarist Steve Stevens. Each slider controls 18dB of cut or boost at 6 different frequencies.

Another strong addition is the Wampler Tumnus Klon clone. I would highly suggest this pedal if the size is of concern. In terms of a well made USA produced pedal, the Chellee is hard to beat. It nails the tones of the Klon and also adds a little bit extra in there. Within a few years, the pedal gained legendary status, also because of the maker’s dedication to customer service, and to hand-wiring every unit that left their shop. No matter which way you use it, it sounds great and is built well. The main difference between the Klon Centaur and the Klon KTR is this is a PCB version of the original. Being that Bill Finnegan is no longer producing the Klon Centaur or Klon KTR, it is not hard to rationalize finding a quality Klon Clone replacement.This other Wampler Klon clone is an evolution of the original Tumnus (see “Authentic “Klones” list) in a bigger enclosure, with optional true bypass switch and tonal flexibility through a three-way EQ section. A toggle switch in the middle of the pedal gives you higher gain options for extra flexibility. The Horseman's stable is a tiny AA-sized enclosure, which means there's no battery compartment. That makes it about 1/6 the size of the original Klon. It's a bit surreal to see that legendary circuit crammed into a device requiring only a sliver of pedalboard space. Unsurprisingly, given its low cost, the parts and build quality don't quite match those of the pricier options. But you can't argue with the Horseman's excellent tones. An exact, part for part, meticulously crafted replica of the infamous “transparent” overdrive pedal.” The enclosure is much smaller though, and the modern graphics arguably cooler. Refining perfection. Volume, Gain and Tone controls are all you need here. This pedal has the sound of a mythical dynamic overdriven tube amp in a box. Now you can buy Joyo products even cheaper! Hear for yourself: As mentioned, most of the Klon's overdrive comes from the TL072 op amp. The clipping diodes are only a factor at high-gain settings. For the clearest comparison of diode color, listen to the second halves of the clips in the Gain Control playlist, where the gain knobs are at maximum. Even here, the two tones are quite similar. The Soul Food is a little brighter at the very top end, and the Klon has a wee bit more weight under 100 Hz. But these differences are far from dramatic. Your choice may be more about price and pedal size than any minor tonal discrepancies.The Tauren pedal nails the classic emulation of a saught after low-to-medium gain overdrive guitar pedal at a great price. Where other classic ‘clones’ have fallen short, the Tauren from JOYO produces a warm transparent overdrive that adds dynamic gain to the signal without altering the tone of the guitar. Tone-wise though, the Soul Food nails it. I would buy the Caline Pegasus over this if I had to do it all over again. In terms of value for money and build quality, the Chellee Ponyboy kills the Soul Food. I don’t see any reason to buy this one over the Chellee. R-01 Tauren Overdrive – The Tauren are a race of large, bovine humanoids who dwell on the great plains of Central Kalimdor, that’s if you play world of warcraft.
