Description

As mentioned above, Nimona is an adaptation of ND Stevenson’s best-selling graphic novel of the same name, which was published as a webcomic from 2012 and then finally released as a graphic novel book in 2015. Here’s the official synopsis for the graphic novel: Hmm. Not bad. Nice touch with the explosion. However, I do have a few suggestions. Here, I'll show you. We could do with more general chaos. I'm talking fire everywhere. We'll murder the king in from of everyone. Then you crown yourself the new king. And since Goldenloin is sure to try and stop us, I'll disguise myself to get close to him and take him out before he knows what's happening!" [51] While this change to Goldenloin's lineage makes for greater dramatic tension between the two knights, the movie also makes more concrete the love story that was implied for much of the comic. When the two are introduced in the movie —which begins before the graphic novel's story does— they are clearly boyfriends, speaking openly about their relationship and love. And they even share a kiss. The Director considers Nimona to be a terrorist, a weapon, [49] and an abomination, [50] rather than a person. Nimona hates her, and hunts her down after freeing part of herself from the Institution's cell.

Multiple analyses have viewed the Institution as one that persecutes queerness and establishes heteronormative hegemonic ideologies through structural violence. Nimona presents a potential to challenge and abolish these systems. In this way, the comic has been compared to The Legend of Korra and Steven Universe. One paper on the work concluded that it is "the blurring of boundaries", especially when it comes to institutions, bodies, and motivations, that allows for these institutions to be undermined. I mean, it's been just a truly wild ride for me. Even the graphic novel being adapted from the webcomic - you know, I really assumed that it would have a much smaller audience. And that's when I started realizing that these characters in this world were kind of taking on a life of their own, and they were starting to evolve. And that was also the experience of making this movie, and it was certainly a very tumultuous journey getting there. There was, you know, a very real time where it didn't seem like it was going to happen at all. National Book Awards 2015". Very exciting. In just a few small lines and short phrases - I have fallen completely in love with this punk Nimona. The webcomic ran from June 2012 to September 2014. [7] Stevenson described completing Nimona as both satisfying and "a little sad". [6] HarperCollins published the completed comic as a young adult graphic novel in May 2015. [2] [8] [9] The work has since been translated into several other languages, including Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, and Turkish. [10] Asked about changes to his original story that surprised him in the film, Stevenson pointed to the movie’s action climax, where Nimona gives in to despair and rises up as a vast, seething monster.

Stevenson began working on Nimona while attending the Maryland Institute College of Art, revisiting a character he had created in high school. Stevenson published Nimona as a webcomic from 2012 through 2014, initially through Tumblr, developing the story and the art style as time progressed. The finished work ultimately doubled as his senior thesis. After an agent reached out to Stevenson, HarperCollins released Nimona in print form in 2015. It has been translated into at least 16 other languages and adapted into an audiobook. All in all, this was a super-fast read but it was TOTALLY worth it! “Aw yeah, let's make some evil plans!”It was very emotional to me to be able to see her come to life, and to see her this way and be like, That’s her. That’s Nimona. That’s this character who got me through so many hard times as a young person,” Stevenson said. “It was such a power fantasy for me. And I think for lots of kids, they’ll feel the same way. She can’t be confined. She can’t be constrained to any form. […] So I’m really, really excited for kids to be able to see themselves in that power fantasy.”
