Calvados Cask n°0410147 - One of 570 - bottled 2015 ---- As mentioned earlier, they bottle this release at barrel proof. While that’s an generally a interesting thing to experience, I feel like taking this neat might not be the ideal preparation because of that. There’s an almost immediate significant alcohol burn on the palate that can be a bit unpleasant, but with repeated trips to the glass it does calm down. This looks like a traditional, antique spirits bottle — specifically, something you’d expect from a Scottish distillery. And I’m totally here for it. Most rum on the market these days is intended to be fun and quirky, but this ancient and storied expression of a very specific kind of rum has earned the right to be a little more stoic. Blanc (White): Fresh, unaged, or briefly aged for up to three months, it is vibrant and intensely flavourful.

As for the size, the label is large… and normally I’d complain about that, since such a huge label would prevent you from seeing the spirit inside the bottle. But the dark green glass used here already means there really isn’t much to see. Price estimate statistics ---- J.M 5 years 2000 Of. Single Cask n°10259 Limited Edition 299 Bottles C.Collins Heritier Crassous de Médeuil ---- The collaboration of the two firms has ‘arisen naturally over time’, with both companies owning high-quality spirits brands that have strong local roots and are made using ‘centuries-old expertise’. In the glass we have a translucent spirit which is likely to have benefited from some filtration to give it a clear appearance. This year’s Caribbean Rum Awards St Barth jury included judges Alexander Britell, editor and publisher of Caribbean Journal; Guy Britton, managing editor and EVP of Caribbean Journal; Christopher Davis, global rum expert and proprietor of the Rhum Room St Barth; rum expert and international cigar sommelier Jose Antonio Hernandez-Solaun; Peter Berntsen, COO of Empire Social Lounge in Miami and founder of Miami Rum Month; Guy Ferdinand, renowned Caribbean chef and owner of Martinique’s Le Petibonum; Myssi Davis, founder of Rum Traveler; Cuban rum expert Ivan Jivkov; and editor-in-chief of Cuba Journal, Simons Chase. Taking a sip, those fruits are the first thing I get, specifically the coconut, mango, banana, and apricot. That’s followed by just a hint of pineapple as well as some good caramel and vanilla notes. It’s a sweet yet complex flavor profile that ends with a rather short finish, a bit of banana being the only note that holds on very long after the other flavors have dissipated. On Ice On the nose, the V.O is again earthy, with that same pineapple note that I also got in the Blanc, but the stand-out note for me is a savory, earthy thing that is quite reminiscent of tobacco leaves. On the palate this segues into more of a toffee/caramel candy richness, with more tobacco, and a lingering earthiness. Mildly sweet, it doesn’t necessarily feel like maturation has been rushed, but it’s certainly not the most complex of the Rhum J.M aged offerings. It will, however, stand in absolutely fine in just about any mixing application where you might want to introduce a little agricole flavor.

Named as The Whisky Exchange’s Rum of the Year 2023, this Jamaican rum is made by Appleton’s inimitable Master Blender Joy Spence and named after the water source that feeds the distillery. A blend of column and pot still rums, aged in oak for 15 years, it’s a rich, fruity, nutty expression of what Jamaican rum can offer. Hazelnuts, dark chocolate, orange peel and roasted coffee beans can all be found in this distinctive rum. Alc 43% Once cultivated and crushed into a juice, the sugar is added to some water and fermented for no more than five days to an alcohol content of 7.5% ABV. (The idea here is that the lower-than-usual alcohol content will allow more flavorful rum to be produced in the end.) Your Budget: JM rums are available at different price points, from more affordable versions for a gentle introduction to limited and numbered editions for collectors and discerning enthusiasts. Sous Bois (Raised in Wood): Aged for a minimum of 12 months in wooden vats or barrels, offering a bridge between the vivacity of blanc and the complexity of aged rums.In the nose delicate and sweet. Wood toasted with love and doused with caramel previously rubbed with apple peel. White fruits, yellow flowers and freshly pressed sugar cane fully beguile you. The island is calling ! While the plantation remains owned by the family of Crassous de Médeuil, the trademark for Rhum J.M. was sold in 2002 to Group Bernard Hayot, a Martinique based trade group who markets and sells the brand of rum worldwide. This is, of course, just a snapshot. Why not take some time to delve further into each country’s rum-making history and the distilleries telling their stories today? Then the next time you hear the catchall term ‘Caribbean rum’, you’ll have a better idea of the full picture. Caribbean rums: eight to get you started This new(ish) brand from Grenada focuses on single origin and terroir in the rum category. This particular expression is made from a sugar cane variety called Lacalome Red. Made as the name suggests on column still, this rum has that lovely sugarcane sweetness with bright tropical notes that move into a mix of orange and vanilla. Alc 50% GBH’s portfolio of spirits includes the Rhum Clément, Rhum JM, Bounty, Chairman’s Reserve and Admiral Rodney rum brands. The brands are produced by Saint Lucia Distillers, which GBH acquired in March 2016.Price estimate statistics ---- J.M 2005 Of. Calvados Cask n°0410149 - One of 580 - bottled 2015 ---- Grands crus, older vintages, large formats, Champagne, whiskies, cognacs, armagnacs, rare wines, or simply a good bottle More info Rhum JM was born in a very particular environment: thanks to the trade winds, abundant rainfall, and extremely rich volcanic soil, sugar cane grows under ideal conditions to give rise to exceptional rums. Founded in the 19th century, the distillery initially focused on sugar production before being taken over by Jean-Marie Martin, its creator, whose initials give the brand its name. Today, JM's reputation is such that these two letters make the hearts of rum enthusiasts from around the world beat faster. White, Amber, and Aged Rum: a Diverse Range for All Tastes Head to St Lucia and you’ll find Deny Duplessis, Master Blender at St Lucia Distillers, exploring the limits of blending, using the distillates coming off the distillery’s assorted column, Vendome and John Dore pot stills. While in Barbados, the Foursquare Rum Distillery, led by its driven CEO and Master Distiller Richard Seale, is blazing a trail for its own Geographical Indication (GI). Watch this space… It began with a rooftop, oceanfront tasting of ultra-rare Martinique rum at St Barth’s magnificent Le Barthelemy Hotel and Spa.

On the nose, it’s redolent in pineapple and fresh fruit, registering as quite sweet, but with lots of greener notes (green plantains, fresh grass) as well. On the palate, it bursts with fresh citrus and pineapple juice, in a way that I can only describe as “tangy,” but then segues into intense earthiness and grassy flavors, alternating between mushroom-like earthiness and green notes. My immediate thought is that I need to get this into a daiquiri soon, just to see how intense (and probably delicious) that will be. The citrus qualities in particular seem to make this a no-brainer for simple preparations like the daiquiri or Ti’ punch. Rhum JM must surely have the rare distinction of being the only distillery located in the shadow of an active volcano, Mount Pelee. Rhum JM oldest distillery still producing on Martinique, and an iconic brand of the Rhum Agricole style. Drinkers should expect rich nutty notes of butter and toffee, with a slight citrus aroma and a chewy mouthfeel.
