About this deal

The Q80B exhibits all the attributes we’ve seen from previous Samsung QLED models. Its images are inherently bright, with well-saturated hues and diamond-etched detail. It’s particularly well suited for daytime TV and sports. See the content you love in a completely new way with the QE55Q80BATXXU. From stunning nature documentaries to gripping sport events, you’ll always be at the heart of the action. The Q80T also combines a neutral colour temperature with the ability to produce real vibrancy, and that’s strikingly effective with this film and its broadly cool palette. The abundant greys are just as miserable and washed out as they should be, but the flashes of colour – Sapper Morton’s shiny red gloves, the holographic billboards of central LA, the flashing lights of K’s flying car – all punch through the murky gloom beautifully.

Disable Intelligent mode and you’ll have access to all the usual image presets, including Filmmaker Mode. What you do get is adaptive HDR10+, a less widely adopted dynamic metadata standard, as well as regular HDR10 and HLG. When it comes to TV tuners, there are both satellite and terrestrial options. There's also a common interface slot for those that require it. Streaming service support is extensive. There’s Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, Britbox, Now, and Apple TV+, to name just a few. UK buyers expecting to find Freeview Play as the default terrestrial TV service will find only vanilla Freeview, but thankfully all the main channel catch-up apps are on board, including BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All4 and My5.

Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying a live scene and white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits) Take home the ultimate in TV entertainment with this 55” QLED 4K TV from Samsung. The range of technology and smart features will change the way you watch your favourite movies and shows. Innovative Technology Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 10% of the screen (measured in Nits) Percentage Luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output Subtitle and audio description information spoken on the electronic programme guide more info panel

If you prefer, you can disable this mode for a more conventional preset selection, comprising Filmmaker Mode, Dynamic, Standard, and Movie. There’s good tonal balance, too. The surprisingly deep bass is thankfully free of the artificiality that’s common of TVs with small drivers, the midrange is clear and naturally weighted, and the treble is rounded off enough to avoid harshness. That said, we would avoid the Adaptive Volume feature, which introduces a little fuzz to proceedings. Adaptive Sound+ is definitely worth using, though, as everything sounds quite small-scale without it. While Samsung’s approach to its 2020 model numbers is off-putting, the Q80T’s performance is anything but. It’s the first mid-range 55-incher that we’ve seen this year, but it sets a formidable benchmark thanks to its dynamic and solid picture, substantial sound and typically exhaustive app selection. On this 4K Smart TV, youexperience depth and dimension on screen just like in real life. Real Depth Enhancer mimics how the human eye interprets depth by increasing foreground contrast, making it ideal for nature shows and other real-life programmes. The HDMIs, of which there are four, aren’t officially 2.1-certified, but they do support the key 2.1 features, including eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), HFR (High Frame Rate), ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate). On the subject of VRR, the FreeSync format used by the Xbox One X and One S is supported out of the box, while G-Sync is apparently coming soon. Samsung suggests that customers have been reticent to spend the extra money the One Connect adds to the price of a TV, and so it’s now restricted to the flagship 4K and 8K models. We’re big fans of the ingenuity and neatness of the system, so it's a shame to see its availability reduced but, on the other hand, Samsung’s 2020 TV prices are lower than 2019’s. We use the Standard preset for all content except games (use the Game preset here). For HDR, we simply add a point to Shadow Detail, switch Local Dimming to High, switch Picture Clarity to Custom and turn the Noise Reduction off. Percentage luminance drop at 20 degree vertical angle from the centre of the screen with 50% white output

The screen, like so many other Quantum Dot sets offered by Samsung, is an obvious choice for bright room viewing. It’s blessed with vibrant colours and fine detail.Like all Samsung’s QLED TVs, the Q80T runs Tizen OS (currently on version 5.5), giving you access to the vast majority of paid streaming platforms and free UK catch-up apps. As for HDR formats, the Q80T supports HDR10, HDR10+ and Hybrid-Log Gamma, and you can enjoy Dolby Atmos audio through a soundbar or surround sound system via the eARC HDMI port. Samsung Q80T review: Price and competition Incidentally, the 50-inch Q80B doesn’t have physical height speakers like the rest of the range, instead relying on virtualisation. Percentage luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 100% white output

As ever, it is worth experimenting with the settings yourself to find the balance you prefer, particularly the Local Dimming and Picture Clarity options. By setting the former to High we increase the punch of bright highlights in otherwise dark scenes but lose a little bit of shadow detail, and while Custom is the right amount of motion processing for us, some may still prefer to switch it off entirely. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) Samsung has included four HDMI and two USB ports to help you make the most of the 55” screen. Link up a soundbar, games console or Blu-Ray player to keep the whole family entertained. There’s even an integrated digital TV service for even more viewing options. You’ll also find Bixby, Google Assistant, and Alexa built in so you can control your Tv with your voice. Featuring Quantum HDR 1500 powered by HDR10+, you’ll enjoy incredible detail with vibrant colour in everything you watch – just as the directors intended. Every frame is optimised to give you breath-taking images from the dark corners of a horror film to a sun-drenched beach. And, Direct Full Array technology gives precise, pin-sharp contrast across the whole screen. You’ll never miss a moment with Samsung. Nothing’s unbeatable, of course, and we’re looking forward to putting the Q80T up against the Sony KD-55XH9505 and LG OLED55CX in particular, but we’d be surprised if it wasn’t in the running for an Award when the time comes. The QE55Q80T looks much like every other QLED of the last couple of years, all dark silver metal, straight edges and pointy corners. Unlike the higher-end Q95T model, which has a single-piece pedestal, the Q80T’s stand is a slightly less suave two-piece design. That said, it still has a compact footprint and the sort of low profile that makes for easy placement of a soundbar. Samsung’s Tizen smart interface ensures there’s no shortage of streaming services on tap, and comes with a number of other attractions, such as a gaming portal and Smartthings oversight.
