The M80 also features an American made custom wound impedance matching transformer which is where the magic really takes place. Relatively crude dynamic microphones with limited frequency response own the stage because they’re rather good at rejecting handling noise. It's not unusual for pro studios to use a dozen or so mics on a drum kit, which takes time, money and patience – especially if things don't quite go to plan. I am probably going to add the Sennheiser E935/E945 and beta 58 to my collection (because of rider requests) but I'm curious about the Telefunken M80 and AKG D7. The Telefunken claims to be close to a condenser in sound and the AKG D7 is supposed to be a step up from the D7? And finally there’s the extended and boosted high-end. This provides that much needed air and sparkle to the voice when compared to the SM58. The extra sensitivity of the E945 makes it more susceptible to plosives, those little bursts of air which cause deep popping sounds. Again, its microphone technique that can help with this – angling the mic very slightly to the side. You can also try using it with a windshield on stage, or with a pop shield in the studio.

The Shure Beta 58A was designed as an upgrade to the industry-standard SM58, with an extended high frequency range. It has a lot of similarities to the Telefunken M80. The SM58 is a legend, an icon of the stage. Ask any young kid to draw a microphone and they’ll trace the shape of an SM58 for you in primary- coloured crayon. It’s that embedded into musical culture. Most podcasters and YouTubers will want to get a quality broadcast out to their audiences with as little fuss and setup as possible. The PodMic is excellent in this respect. Its form factor is sufficiently chunky to give you something to speak into, yet small enough not to be a distraction for guests or viewers. It’s also discreet, meaning you can dot a few around a table without them getting in the way. Investing in one of these mics is a no-brainer, but which one? Clearly, it's got to be the one that suits your vocals or application better – but, let's face it, they're so inexpensive, you'll probably end up buying both eventually.

The M80 is available in some seriously bling colourways. Fluro pink, yellow, orange, gold – no fewer than 15, in fact. You can even mix and match the colour of the body and grille for maximum stage presence. I am not one of those engineers who has to use Brand X or Y. Sometimes, to the annoyance of manufacturers and distributors, I will move between brands. For me it’s about the artist and what suits their sound and my mixing style, not who sent me a T-shirt this week or gave me discounts! The diaphragm on the Telefunken M80 is super thin, which gives it a fast, un-colored response that captures your sound with incredible detail. Because it's not a midrange-heavy mic like some dynamic mics, it's not just for vocals. You can get great results with the M80 in front of a guitar amp, over a snare drum, or virtually any other instrument that needs a detailed, well-balanced microphone. From all of these mics my favourites are the JZ HH1, Sennheiser E935/945, EV 767a and Shure beta 58.
