About this deal

Kuldesh doesn’t have the box with him but he’s sure he can explain that away. He hopes to be “ on his way before the snow turns to ice .” Sadly, that’s not to be.

While previous books in the Thursday Murder Club series have been full of action and crowded with characters, it becomes noticeably apparent early on that this book feels different with its quieter, softer tone, fewer characters, and an unexpected emotional punch. With that said, it's a topic that's handled in a most thoughtful and compassionate way by the author. Osman and I end the Zoom call a few minutes later. I'm still thinking about the last line in The Last Devil to Die, uttered by Joyce but equally an encapsulation of Osman's relationship with his readers: “I know it sounds silly, but I feel less alone when I write. So thank you for keeping me company, whoever you might be.” I have started writing it now and it’s a load of fun,” he says. “It’s a completely different cast of characters, which is great for me. We’ll see how people react.”

JK Rowling's new Strike thriller is fat-shaming and sexist

Fiona Shaw is FABULOUS! I got quite attached to Leslie Manville with the first two books, but Fiona is an obvious transition as narrator! She's incredible and continues to pull you in every step of the way. I really love reading along with the audiobook. It helps you stay engaged and feels like you're IN the world of these character. That's a testament not only to Richard Osman, but certainly Fiona too. All in all, this book is fantastic and I highly recommend it to YOU and YOU and YOU and YOU! But then he had a story idea—one he kept secret from almost everyone. It wasn't difficult to pursue; quiz shows are filmed in bursts, which left a lot of down time during the various breaks between seasons of Pointless. He was also filming a new, celebrity-oriented show, Richard Osman's House of Games, which debuted in September 2017. All of that love of information and knowledge, and of crime fiction in particular, had to go somewhere. And his mother, now living at a retirement village, offered an endless supply of stories about the lives of the other residents. They could be anyone, anything—maybe even spies, once upon a time. The Last Devil to Die is equal parts well-plotted mystery, scintillating repartee and deep reflection on what it means to love and live.” The Last Devil to Die audiobook narrator Fiona Shaw does another remarkable job with her voicing skills. She's one of the reasons I've made this format my preference for this series. Be sure to listen to the conversation between Osman and Shaw at the end of the audio for the author's thoughts about why he's planning to do less TV and more writing in the near future.

But what truly touched me was how Osman and Shaw portrayed dementia in the story. It was the most heartbreaking, beautiful thing I had ever read/listened to. The sensitivity and authenticity with which they depicted this challenging condition added a layer of depth and poignancy to the narrative that left me deeply moved.

Game show host turned bestselling novelist, Richard Osman, is the author behind the mystery club phenomenon known as the Thursday Murder Club.
