The story flip flops between her life in the present and the events that led up to prison in the USA. But after about a dozen of them, I kind of started to wish I never had to read another thriller, ever again. When Karen staggers in from the garden, bleeding and traumatised, she claims that she has been assaulted—by Ali’s husband, Mike. Ali must make a split-second decision: who should she believe? Her horrified husband, or her best friend? With Mike offering a very different version of events, Ali knows one of them is lying—but which? And why? Her unease only deepens after renovations begin, when the builders find sinister dolls hidden in the walls. As Helen digs into the house’s past, she discovers that the previous owner was not only rumoured to be a witch; she was also imprisoned for a brutal triple murder thirty years earlier. Ireland in the 1990s seemed a safe place for women. With the news dominated by the Troubles, it was easy to ignore non-political murders and sexual violence, to trust that you weren’t going to be dragged into the shadows and killed. But beneath the surface, a far darker reality had taken hold.

McGowan delivers a hugely relevant novel for the post #MeToo era and a searing indictment of how far we still have to go. A story that is like a fine wine laced with poison—it’ll slay you." - L V Hay I do like Claire McGowan's books, but this took a while to grab hold of me. It settles down into what feels like quite an old-fashioned adventure whereby Mary and Tim, finding the police less than helpful, set about their own amateur investigation into the disappearance of a nineteen-year-old girl, Samantha. There are plenty of twists and turns along the way and ultimately it's all a bit far-fetched, but enjoyable enough. This is the second Claire McGown novel I've read, and it didn't disappoint. She does a fantastic job of constructing characters that you can really hate, like Casey/Rachel's mother dearest, and the mom of the family she nanny's for. You really feel for Casey/Rachel, as she struggles with who she is, what she wants, and finding inner strength. I was in such a murder mystery mood from the middle of August until a couple a weeks ago - that was practically all I wanted to read. So I did.

From the bestselling author of What You Did comes a chilling story about a missing girl and two potential witnesses. They both think they saw her. But can they trust their own eyes? With no one to turn to and the police set on pinning her as the perp, she undertakes an investigation of her own and discovers that life has a bad way of repeating itself. As someone who has spent a lot of my professional life in care homes, my jaw did drop in response to what was going on in one home in the middle of the night. I can't quite imagine anyone getting away with it, but you never know.

The characters are conflicting. I like them, but not all of them. When I think of it, the flaws in them should make them feel more realistic, but some decisions did not appeal to me, which explains why I am not a big fan of the main characters. When Mary & Tim realise Samantha's disappearance could link to the disappearances of several other young women in the area over the years, things snowball. It's the usual case of amateur detectives somehow being able to outwit the police & get witnesses to talk, for example, the person they initially think is behind Sam's disappearance conveniently has a 'Road to Damascus' conversion & spills everything. The plot was okay but stretches credulity in some parts, it was interesting though & it mostly kept my attention. 3 stars Other than that, I Know You was a nice, engaging thriller that I’m sure many people would enjoy very much. But words are nothing compared to what her policeman father, PJ, is dealing with. The hot summer is simmering with violence and the entire force is focused on finding a bomber leaving devices on the routes of Orange parades. Claire McGowan has pulled off that rare thing—a thrilling suspense novel that not only keeps the reader constantly guessing but also features authentic and engaging characters." - A K Turner

years later, Rachel finds the body of her boyfriends' ex wife and instead of calling it in, she goes home and puts the kettle on. It won't take long before she is in the middle of a media storm once more.
