About this deal

The Fuji 23mm f1.4 is not weather-resistant like the f2, so your shooting environments are more limited. This means you can use the f1.4 outdoors, but in unpredictable weather, it may not hold up as strong as the f2. Weight In the example above, both lenses render the out-of-focus LED lamps quite differently: the newer XF 23mm f2 on the left renders an asymmetrical cat’s eye shape that’s quite distinctive towards the corners, whereas the older XF 23mm f1.4 maintains a more rounded shape. The bokeh blobs from the XF 23mm f1.4 are unsurprisingly larger than the newer lens and while neither suffers from unattractive onion-ringing effects within the blobs, its’ the newer XF 23mm f2 that’s exhibiting more obvious outlining. There’s no right or wrong in rendering, but to me, the older XF 23mm f1.4 looks more attractive in this comparison, even looking beyond the difference in depth-of-field. Lens sharpness has nothing to do with picture sharpness; every lens made in the past 100 years is more than sharp enough to make super-sharp pictures if you know what you're doing. The only limitation to picture sharpness is your skill as a photographer. It's the least talented who spend the most time worrying about lens sharpness. Skilled photographers make great images with whatever camera is in their hands; I've made some of my best images of all time with an irreparably broken camera! Most pixels are thrown away before you see them, but camera makers don't want you to know that. Buy the 23mm f2 Fujifilm lens here and start snapping your very own travel photos. You might also like the Best Fuji Lenses for Portraits Review. Focusing is internal, so if you use filters, you don’t have to worry about those moving. The thread size of the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR lens is 43mm, which is the same as the 35mm f/2, but different from the 46mm thread of the 50mm lens. That’s something to consider if you plan on investing in all three of the f/2 lenses available.

Personally, I think it looks great. Of course it’s not as creamy as an f/1.4 lens might give you, but it’s way better than any f/2.8 lens will give you. That’s the compromise with these weather-proof primes. The Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR lens has a minimum focusing distance of 0.22m, with a maximum magnification of 0.13x. It is not a true macro lens, but you can use it for typical macro subjects, such as flowers and still life, to good effect. As with most lenses, the 23mm f2 has its own pros and cons. This Fuji 23mm review is aimed at helping you better understand the lens and where it outshines other lenses. There is also a comparison to the Fuji 23mm f1.4 at the end for those who are contemplating which one to get.

Where to buy Fuji lenses

At its widest point around the aperture ring, the XF 23mm f2 has a maximum diameter of 57mm, but again this tapers beyond the aperture ring to 45mm by the time you reach the 43mm filter thread at the end. Meanwhile the lens barrel measures 52mm in length, making it a fairly compact walk-around lens, albeit not quite in the pancake territory of models like the XF 27mm f2.8. First off, 23mm is an extremely versatile focal length. It’s a wide-angle lens that you can still use for portraits of people without it looking unflattering. And that’s why I think this will be the most thorough and hands-on Fuji XF 23mm f/2 lens review you’re going find on the web. The B+W 43mm 010 is an excellent filter, but it's not multicoated which could lead to more ghosts in harsh light. Try the multicoated B+W 010M or the Hoya 43mm Multicoated NXT filter if you shoot into the light. The Hoya Multicoated NXT Plus filter adds a water-resistant coating. Fuji offers its own 43mm Protector filter. I’ll start with a portrait composition shot from about a meter and a half away. Here’s the full image from each lens, followed by cropped areas for a closer look.

The Fujinon 23mm f1.4 is definitely heavier, weighing a total of 300g, so it may not travel as easily as the f2. It also makes handling the f1.4 somewhat harder than the f2. And carrying it around on city walking tours is much less comfortable. It's almost all metal with engraved markings like most other Fujinon XF lenses, while this one is made in the Philippines, not Japan like most of the other XF lenses. The Fujinon 23mm f2 is about as good as you’ll get from a big company in terms of color, contrast, and micro-contrast for a lens this small. Believe it or not, Sony has a few good ones too, like the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.8. Actually, the Sony Zeiss 35mm f2.8 has a little more pop than this lens, but it has some pretty nasty color ring patterns. You’ll get some incredible natural colours and contrasts with this lens. But Fujifilm does focus a bit more on sharpness for this range, so it’s not as natural as some other lenses. Nevertheless, the 23mm f2 lens is arguably the better of the series when looking at micro-contrast and colours. Fuji 23mm f2 Bokeh I have found these two 23mm options to be similar in performance quality. It is not an apples-to-apples comparison as the X100V is a fixed lens option and the XF 23mm f/2 is a stand-alone lens option that can be used on a variety of Fujifilm X Series cameras. So Fujifilm’s latest 23 is the most expensive of its siblings and in this review I’ll show you what it’s capable of, make some direct comparisons against the original 1.4 and compact f2 models, and ultimately help you decide if it justifies the asking price.

All in all, I can say that street photography changed my style and passion for photography big time. Finally, I found a genre in photography that I can do everywhere at any time. The Fuji X-T3 with the 23mm F2 WR is a system I can rely on in any occasions: bright sunny days, cloudy days, rainy days and at night. Is it going to give you the same kind of effect for portraits? Probably not, especially as you might not want to be this close to someone’s face with a 23mm lens. The lower price makes it an excellent travel lens for beginners since you’re not investing large amounts of money while deciding if photography is your hobby or career. It also makes for a splendid gift for avid travellersand travel bloggers. Paradoxically this lens is a completely different and larger design than the 23mm f/2 lens used in the Fuji X100, X100S, X100T and X100F. It uses modern 43mm×0.75mm filters, not the finer-threaded 43mm×0.5mm filters from rangefinder lenses of the 1950s.

This prime wide-angle lens is a 35mm equivalent focal length and is designed for APS-C format FUJIFILM X mount mirrorless cameras.of Street Photography is all about failure. To be honest: sometimes, at the end of a day, I don’t have a single shot that I really really like, but on other days I come home with two or more. That’s the part of the game of street photography. Close the 1.4 model to f2 to match the aperture of the compact lens and it improves a little further still, although there’s little to be gained in the middle of the frame of the new lens by stopping it further to f2.8. That said, the compact f2 lens on the right has improved a little closed one stop to f2.8, but still falls behind the premium model on the left. It’s also worth mentioning Fujifilm’s X100 series which feature built-in 23mm f2 lenses. While the focal length and focal ratio match the XF 23mm f2 though, don’t assume they’re the same optical design – the X100’s all-in-one design allows some of the optical elements to be housed within the body and closer to the sensor. Indeed it also implements a simpler optical construction with eight elements in six groups with one aspherical element. That said, while the optical construction is different, I noticed the X100 lens sharing some characteristics with the XF 23mm f2, which I’ll mention later.
