About this deal

Pulling the wheels out of the box, it was great to see they were running true and the spoke tension felt taut throughout. Tubeless rim tape comes fitted (double wrapped) as standard, and the valves are supplied too, so provided you have tyres and sealant you are ready to get them set up and head straight out of the door. Hunt recommends using 25mm or 28mm tyres, though you can go wider, if you can get them to fit inside your brake caliper. In the wind tunnel testing data from the virtually identical disc versions (at least in terms of the rims), Hunt found that a 25mm tyre is more aerodynamically optimal due to the 27mm rim width. That said, 28mm works really well too, with the small decrease in aero performance countered by an increase in comfort.

Dish: The relative position of the rim to the hub. On nearly all frame designs, the rim must be perfectly centred over the hub Nipples: At the rim end (usually), the spokes thread into a special nut called a nipple. Most wheels can be straightened (trued) by adjusting spoke tension via the nipple. Rim: Sitting on the outside of the wheel, the rim holds the tyre and provides a braking surface for rim-brake-equipped bikes. We do not compromise on quality, all our wheelsets feature the same high quality carbon rims, with your choice of coloured graphic, or for the understated look, our Stealth design. Our entry level 350 model is more than a match for its competitors, offering exceptional value for money. Our medium and top of the range 240 and 180 models take on the big boys and win. They are lighter, better built and handmade, all at a price that is considerably cheaper than our rivals. We also offer the all new VeloElite ONE range, based around our ONE hub.

I like how they maintain speed. Once I spin them to about 40km/h (24.9mph), they keep the momentum pretty well. But, seating them was also easy with an air compressor. I didn’t try seating them with a floor pump, though.

Deep wheels can often feel jarring but the ride quality of the Hunts was fine. I suspect this was partly to do with the superbly supple Vittoria Corsa tyres. The wheels also weren't fazed by blustery cross winds and I didn't feel like I was being thrown across the road.

Bontrager has employed tried and true technologies to create a wheel with high performance at a low cost. We put the Aeolus Elite 50 to the test to see if anything has been sacrificed

As with other Cadex wheels, the 22.4mm internal width helps with both of those situations. Widening the base of the tyre helps it flow better into the rest of the wheel, for better aero performance, but it also makes for a rounder profile that's more stable. Descending stability is a big advantage to all the Cadex wheels and that hasn't changed. Enve has one-upped Cadex with an even wider 25mm internal but Cadex has made its own subtle changes with the increased bead width. I can't put my finger on any of those design details during the ride but these are high-volume wheels with a comfortable, stable, ride. They do well descending, they do well in crosswinds, and as someone who likes to feel in control of the bike, I appreciate it.

CRC were doing them at a fair old discount when I got them so given the mileage I've put through them they're fantastic value for money. The sort of wheels you don't mind using for regular riding - it's not like a set of Lightweights or something where you'd only use them on the sunniest days and smoothest roads - and I'd be happy racing them too. Partly becasue they're easily good enough for it and partly because they're not so insanely expensive that I'd be terrified of crashing them. This is Shimano’s 12-speed Micro Spline freehub for mountain bikes, which isn’t compatible with 12-speed Shimano road cassettes. Josh Patterson / Immediate MediaTubular: A type of tyre, also known as a ‘tub’, a ‘single’ or a ‘sew-up’. The inner tube is stitched into a carcass that has tread on the outside and is glued to a concave rim The rear wheel ended up much better. Only two spokes didn’t meet the 5% tolerance. Otherwise, the spoke tension was super consistent. Farsports Wave 45/50mm rear wheel spoke tension readings | Source: cyclistshub.com Rim Centering (Dishing)
