Currently on small flake shavings with wood pellets underneath his wee patch. He has a 6" deep bed with mats at the front and underneath the right of his bed. 12x12 stable. When I dig out, I take out the left side of the bed move the bedding from the right (including banks) over to the left to go on top of fresh pellets, and put the new shavings in on the right. We've both been v.happy with this arrangement but lately his stable seems to be getting v.dusty. Horse has dust allergy, so not ideal.
What will you do with the time you save?
As to your half and half bed, I wouldn't. The absorbtion characteristics are too different. I would use your shavings for the banks if you don't want to waste them completely. Aubiose is an excellent hemp pet bedding and it will work well for almost any small animal, even though it first became popular for horses. Our hemp is the overall gold standard of animal & pet care, and it is noted for it’s extremely absorbent properties and minimal dust levels compared to pine, aspen, and other hemp. Hemp bedding is not as cosy as some alternatives as it tends to lie flat in the cage and is not fluffy like some paper or wood shavings.When we tested the hemp bedding, it actually remained very dry in the central part of the cage, so we could possibly have made it last longer than a week just by replacing the bedding in more soiled areas.
