About this deal

In the late 15 th century DR, as a result of a vision of the demon lord in the Darklake, a faction of the kuo-toa of Sloobludop started a cult of Demogorgon. [2] Rumors & Legends [ ] Mike Mearls, et al. (November 2016). Volo's Guide to Monsters. Edited by Jeremy Crawford, et al. ( Wizards of the Coast), p. 219. ISBN 978-0786966011.

He fears the return of Obox-ob, the once-powerful obyrith lord who first held the title of Prince of Demons, and who has tried and failed to kill Demogorgon on multiple occasions. [1] All stages of the Demogorgon life cycle, minus the initial larval form. (Note: Mike is included for scaling purposes.) This commentary on Thebaid is known to have survived until the 1600s, where the name Demogorgon appears in Milton's 1667 work, Paradise Lost: In 1985, the Soviet Union successfully opened a gate to the Upside Down in a base under Starcourt Mall using experimental technology, allowing them to procure at least half a dozen Demodog specimens. These specimens were transported to a facility in Kamchatka, where all but one were cryogenically frozen and stored in tanks - they were inanimate, but alive, nonetheless; a fragment of the Mind Flayer was also captured. One creature, through accident or design, matured into an adult Demogorgon, which the Soviets occasionally fed live prisoners; they hoped to potentially weaponize the beast. The Demogorgon, unlike other tall Killers, does not step over vaults, but rather crawls through them. Demogorgons were predatory creatures that inhabited Dimension X and the Upside Down. All Demogorgons encountered thus far are assumed to obey the Mind Flayer and by extension Vecna, and make up part of the Upside Down's hive mind. Under the hive mind’s influence, Demogorgons are murderous, violent and have limited intelligence. Scientists at Hawkins Lab began investigating the dimension, discovering exactly what it contained. One such scientist entered through the Gate, wearing a hazmat suit linked to a chain rope. The scientist was savaged and killed by the Demogorgon almost immediately after entering the dimension. The Demogorgon hunted and killed other people and creatures, being particularly lured by blood. Its victims included Barbara Holland, hunters Dale and Henry, and a wounded deer. After Nancy Wheeler entered the Upside Down through a temporary portal, she observed the Demogorgon as it feasted on the deer. The Demogorgon noticed her, chasing her until she returned through the portal. He is the ultimate antagonist behind the scenes in Bastion of Broken Souls (2002), where his head Aameul arranges for adventurers to kill the dragon Ashardalon as part of an elaborate plot to kill his other head, Hethradiah.

Demogorgons seen in later years seemed unable to open temporary gates - even the Soviet-captured Demogorgon, which otherwise seemed to be stronger, faster and more capable than the 1983 specimen, did not wield this power. On top of that, Demogorgon's abilities can disrupt a party. His actual spellcasting is mediocre, even if spells like Dispel Magic and Feeblemind can tip the fight heavily in his favor. Instead, he benefits from his Gaze ability and his supernatural Lair Actions. Demogorgon's romantic interests included the succubus Shami-Amourae and the Succubus Queen Malcanthet, both of whom had manipulated him for their own benefits. Shami-Amourae, however, was imprisoned in the Wells of Darkness for her manipulations. [37] [24] He was the brother of another demon lord called Mandrillagon. [38]

In Seasons 1 and 2 of Netflix's Stranger Things, the residents of Hawkins, Indiana are terrorized by a strange creature known as "The Demogorgon". The kids at the forefront of the show may have repurposed the name, inspired by the monster from their D&D campaign. As D&D players are well aware, the Stranger Things version of Demogorgon varies not insignificantly from the in-game version, but still... we're just glad to see this two-headed demon lord name-dropped so openly! At the land's shore lie the swampy Brine Flats, at whose edge stand the realm's capital city of Lemoriax. In these swamps Demogorgon has a fortress, Ungorth Reddik, filled with his minions.

He briefly conquered half of Hollow's Heart, realm of Fraz-Urb'luu, but was forced to withdraw when his own realm was invaded by Zuregurex, tanar'ri lord of the drowned dead. Demogorgon responded by destroying that demon lord's realm, Guttlevetch, the 480th layer of the Abyss, which lies in ruins to this day.

It's a mistake to rely too heavily on Demogorgon's Gaze in combat. It's an effective way to disrupt a party, but not to kill one. Demogorgon has to trade out significant damage to stun or confuse a character. The Hypnotic Gaze is far and away the most powerful, as it can force D&D characters to damage their allies and waste their most expensive resources in one go. Musäus, Johann Karl August (1782). "Rolands Knappen". Volksmärchen der Deutschen (in German). Vol.1. Gotha: C. W. Ettinger. The group began to hypothesize that the Monster may have really existed, and was responsible for Will's disappearance. From this point on, the group began referring to the creature as "the Demogorgon". Demogorgon casts the darkness spell four times at its lowest level, targeting different areas with the spell. Demogorgon doesn’t need to concentrate on the spells, which end on initiative count 20 of the next round. This obsession with twinhood dominates Demogorgon's attitude and his followers. The letter Y acts as a symbol of sorts for him. His home rises above the water in a pair of towers. Many of the D&D creatures and monsters associated with Demogorgon have a two-headed appearance.

The name Demogorgon is introduced in a discussion of Thebaid 4.516, which mentions "the supreme being of the threefold world" ( triplicis mundi summum). In one manuscript, the author says of Statius, Dicit deum Demogorgona summum, cuius scire nomen non licet ("He is speaking of the Demogorgon, the supreme god, whose name it is not permitted to know", or perhaps "He is speaking of a god, the supreme Demogorgon"). Prior to Lactantius, there is no mention of the supposed "Demogorgon" anywhere by any writer, pagan or Christian. However, as noted above, there are several different manuscript traditions, including one that gives "demoirgon", which has been taken by most critical editors to indicate some form of misconstruction of the Greek dēmiourgon. Jahnke thus restores the text to read "He is speaking of the Demiurge, whose name it is not permitted to know". However, this phantom word in one of the manuscript traditions took on a life of its own among later scholars. Non tardar amato bene," left incomplete by Mozart was inserted in Da Ponte's next project, Il Demogorgone (D. Heartz, "Mozart and Da Ponte", The Musical Quarterly, 1995); the question " how did Righini wind up setting a text written for Mozart, and how could Demogorgon's name was earlier invoked by Faustus in Scene III of Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus (1590) when the eponymous Doctor summons Mephistopheles with a Latin incantation. Demogorgon, his realm and his cult are described in great detail in Dragon Magazine #357, p.20-32, and appears on the cover of that issue.Since then, Demogorgon has been named in works that include Milton’s Paradise Lost, Doctor Faustus, and a weird short story by Voltaire called “Plato’s Dream” in which he’s responsible for creating the Earth. Curious about D&D's version of Demogorgon? Read on! Aameul and Hathradiah (the names of Demogorgon's two heads) look forward in telling you... A BRIEF HISTORY The earliest known reference to the name Demogorgon appears in a popular Latin commentary (dated around 350-400 AD) of the ancient epic Roman poem Thebaid (published around 92 AD). [15] The name "Demogorgon" is speculated by scholars to be a misspelling of the Greek "dēmiourgon", meaning "demiurge", introduced by later transcriptions. Still, even though he’s a more subtle enemy than you’d expect with a challenge rating of 26, fighting Demogorgon head on is the kind of thing that only very powerful (and/or very stupid) parties of adventurers choose to do.
