About this deal

The publication sequence of the books differs from the fictional chronology, with the time frame of some books overlapping. One of the novels, Flashman and the Redskins, is in two parts: part one takes place in 1849–50, while the second covers 1875–76. Although the main series of stories finishes in 1894, Flashman lives on until 1915 and appears in his late 80s in another Fraser novel, Mr American. Fraser, George MacDonald (1991). Flashman and the Mountain of Light. London: HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0-00-617980-1. In addition, the plot is fun, going into unique territories, both for Flashman as well as historical novels in general; I don't know how many books can say the cover nearly the entirety of the Indian Ocean in the span of one novel. And the final third , which takes us to the not-often talked about kingdom of Madagascar almost feels like, as Flashy sort of puts it, a Gulliver's Travels segment straight out of a nightmare. Flashman's son, Harry II, is used as a character in some of the short stories created for the " Tales of the Shadowmen" series. He first appeared in the eighth volume. His son has several of the characteristics of his father, but appears to be less a coward.

Flashman appears to know him well and claims to have shared his lovers, Lillie Langtry and Daisy Brooke. He also suspects Elspeth of having "been at grips in a potting-shed at Windsor in '59" with him. Fraser, George MacDonald (1995). Flashman and the Angel of the Lord. London: HarperCollins. ISBN 978-0-00-649023-4. The whole thing is carried off in very James-bond-at-sea style, which of course is exactly what you’d expect from MacDonald Fraser, who of course wrote some of the scripts to the bond movies. in the hold of a warship under fire, with a Malay maiden as explosive as the shells bursting above?

As always, Fraser's research is meticulous, and his writing far more accomplished than some in the literary canon would be comfortable admitting. Flashman's Lady contains some truly outstanding descriptive prose and scene construction, as Fraser handles massive pirate battles, orgiastic Madagascaran feasts, and other set-pieces with aplomb, keeping all plates spinning at once: lush setting, frenetic action, dozens of characters, and our hero's singular perspective. About the Book

I was slightly annoyed by the "editing" of blasphemies in the "Flashman Papers". I had to pause each time to work out that "b-----d" was "bastard" and not "bugger" or "bloody", and it took me a while to realize that "C----t" was "Christ", because I was trying to think of an obscenity that fitted. Raises dastardliness to the level of an art... One of the most amusing and sardonic novels I have ever read!"-- Omaha World Patrice MacMahon - President of the French Third Republic. Flashman is with Grant when he meets with him. a b c d Langley, William (6 January 2008). "Profile: Harry Flashman, the Kind of Utter Bounder That Empires are Built on". The Sunday Telegraph. London. p.28. In spite of his numerous character flaws, Flashman is represented as being a perceptive observer of his times ("I saw further than most in some ways" [7]). In its obituary [8] of George MacDonald Fraser, The Economist commented that realistic sharp-sightedness ("if not much else") was an attribute Flashman shared with his creator.
