About this deal

Luo, G., Houston, V. L., Mussman, M., Garbarini, M., Beattie, A. C., & Thongpop, C. (2009). Comparison of male and female foot shape. Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 99(5), 383-390. The upper is dense and padded without any real venting. The idea is the weave is just loose enough to dissipate heat. However, it feels a bit warm on hot days. The problem with exciting shoes is that they’re still new so you never know what you are going to get and if it’s going to work for you. The Gel-Cumulus™, like the Gel-Nimbus™ and the Gel-Kayano™ are ASICS' classic, staple shoes and have been around for some time. They form part of the 'Run Further - Neutral' range. ASICS is certainly not resting on its laurels as they just keep getting better. The technology is simple but the comfort is there.....a versatile, well cushioned and durable running shoe which is also great value for money.

You don’t have to worry about durability or fit issues with the Cumulus 23, or about getting injured from too much softness or not enough. The Cumulus 23 has the right amount of everything. I know I’ve mentioned forefoot flexibility a few times already, but I want to point out that it is not overly flexible to the point of being a little tedious to run in. I had that experience a little recently with the Brooks Ghost 13 where there was too much forefoot flex resulting in forefoot fatigue towards the end of my 6-8milers. There is none of that here. Some combination of the smooth and firm midsole keeps things turning over easily. I’ve had a really good run of testing daily trainers of the more traditional variety lately and this is one of my favourites. The Gel Cumulus fits true to size. It’s not too narrow or too wide. This shoe should accommodate a wide variety of foot shapes easily. Dang, I want to hate the Gel Cumulus, but it’s comfortable The significant updates that ASICS made to the Gel-Cumulus™ 22, which made them a massive improvement on their predecessor are now in the Gel-Cumulus™ 23. One of the most significant is the gender specific features. What this means is that the mid sole is different in both the men's and the women’s shoes and provides support specifically for their foot shape. This makes the shoes much more comfortable. Saucony Ride 14- The best in class 2020 trainer only gets better in its 2021 edition, with an improved fit and ride

Who is the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 23 Best for?

The outsole pattern along with relatively soft rubber up front, contributes to the softness at the forefoot and an easy flex which instead of having a set flex point is long and gradual. I think the rubber could be a touch firmer upfront to give the shoe a touch more response and pop at faster paces. Grip has been solid and durability as always with ASICS should be good. Puma Velocity Nitro- Brand new trainer out of Puma. A versatile, protective ride that will work for many

You want a budget, lightweight shoe. If weight is your focus, the ASICS Hyper Speed is still budget-minded but almost 2 ounces lighter. The Gel Cumulus 23 is a shoe that doesn’t make you think about which shoe to wear for what run. This shoe is designed on a budget for the runner that just wants something they can comfortably jog in day-in and day-out no matter what type of workout they are aiming for. In a world where daily trainers have carbon plates and super foam midsoles, the dependable ASICS Cumulus 23 still doesn’t feel like a boring shoe. From time to time carriers may deliver earlier or later, or on non working days however this is cannot be guaranteed nor should it be expected. Sam is the Editor and Founder of Road Trail Run. He is 63 with a 2018 3:40 Boston qualifier. Sam has been running for over 48 years and has a 2:28 marathon PR. These days he runs halves in the just sub 1:40 range training 30-40 miles per week mostly at moderate paces on the roads and trails of New Hampshire and Utah. He is 5’9” tall and weighs about 164 lbs. Towards the rear, you get a traditional rigid internal heel counter sandwiched in ample padding that runs around the heel and ankle.

Fit: A- (Secure, slightly snug fit. Toebox is slightly tapered but does stretch. Upper comfortable against bare skin)The men’s version only has the Space Construction on the heel whereas the women’s version has it on the heel and the forefoot.

It’s a neutral daily trainer with enough form in the heel to add stability for runners that care more about just getting out for a jog than those focused on their stride and speed. The ASICS LITE rubber in the outsole is soft and designed to improve durability in high impact areas. The midsole has ASICS’ FLYTEFOAM™ Propel cushion. While this isn’t the most cushioned ride, it still provides a ton of support, responsiveness, and ground feel. I think this cushion will last a long time and remain responsive, even after a few hundred miles on them. Personal: C+ (I want to like this shoe, but the heel absolutely killed this. These are relegated to work shoes)

The shoe may not wow you with its performance, or be the envy of onlooking eyes, but it’s consistent in its ride and doesn’t try to be something it’s not. This is a daily trainer without bells and whistles, that works just fine. Who should buy the Gel Cumulus 23 ASICS kept the Gel Cumulus under 10 ounces (9.8 ounces/277g) which is great. It’s not overly heavy and as a daily trainer, it’s actually decent in the weight category. The ASICS GEL-Cumulus 23 has many features that make it a staple in any runner’s rotation. Here are my top three favorite things about it: The Simple Comfort
