About this deal

Literal Genie: He wants to fulfill the performers' stated desires, but doesn't understand what they really mean. Caine creates an exit door that leads to other doors and eventually into the void because he doesn't understand that the performers want to leave the simulation rather than the place they're in. Digital Abomination: Like Kaufmo, any performer who becomes abtracted turn into a corrupted, glitchy, multi-eyed, incomprehensible creature. through inversion and antisocial behavior, these characters sharply define what is correct and what is not. Like the contrast of light and shadow, the clowns provide definition and depth to important social values and behavior. Together with the monumental portrayals of rulers, they serve as a foil for understanding Classic Maya conceptions of rulership and authority. Simply put, whereas the monuments illustrate how a public figure should behave, the clowns demonstrate how one should not. This contrast is only in the sense of the ideal, not the real. Like the early Colonial Baldzam [clowns or buffoons] and the characters of contemporary Tzotzil festivals, the ancient clowns may have called attention to actual vices found with positions of authority. In the 11th and 12th centuries, the title minstrel (“little servant”) was the name given to a wide range of entertainers, including singers, musicians, jugglers, tumblers, magicians, and jesters. In the 12th century, the title of follus or “fool” began to be mentioned in documents. A fool named Roland le Pettour was given 30 acres of land by King Henry II when he retired, on condition that he return to the royal court every year on Christmas day to “leap, whistle and fart”. Not a bad deal, if you ask me. The ritual buffoons of Mesoamerica have frequently been compared to the Pueblo clowns of the contemporary American southwest. The absurd nature of the latter helps to provide insights into social perceptions since they “reveal what the Pueblos find serious or absurd, baffling or wrong, fearful or comical about life and about other people,” says Alfonso Ortiz, a Native American cultural anthropologist. Maya ritual clowns served a similar function, often satirising established authority and social norms. The Mesoamericanist and Mayanist Karl Taube notes that:

Only Sane Woman: Well, she's clearly not playing with a full bag of marbles herself, but she still comes off as far more well-adjusted and friendly than the rest of the Circus performers, all of whom run the gamut from neurotic to cynical to downright mean. Big Bad Wannabe: The Gloink Queen was conjured by Caine to be the Big Bad of the "Gather the Gloinks" adventure, but none of the cast take it seriously, and the Queen ends up being trounced by the Abstracted Kaufmo, an actual threat to the performers that eclipses anything the Gloink Queen could have done. Adorable Abomination: These non-humanoid non-hashbrownoid "humanoid hash browns" are all cute and colorful shapes with derpy-looking faces on them, but their queen is a massive worm with a mouth that lines its whole body and A Head at Each End with numerous eyes and teeth. Big Eater: Implied. He asks the others if they want to eat something, right after Zooble gets taken away by Gloinks, and after the adventure ends, he claims to be hungry, despite having no need for food. Jagged: a rough, uneven edge or surface that could be used to create a spooky Halloween decoration. We Hardly Knew Ye: He's already snapped and become abstracted before even being properly introduced.

Tombstone Teeth: His teeth usually appear as a single row of long rectangles, and don't separate even when he's talking (except when Zooble is choking him). Second Law of Gender-Bending: In a very unconventional version, Zooble being put in a genderless body in the Circus has lead them to not identify as any gender (whether from abandoning a previous one or just not remembering it).

Circus NPCs

Virtuous Character Copy: Gooseworx confirmed that Caine is based on AM, the evil supercomputer from the story that inspired the show. However, Caine's well-meaning, Obliviously Evil approach to it makes him leagues better than his inspiration, who absolutely despises humans and relishes in torturing them. It's particularly telling comparing how the two react to the idea of escape: AM has absolutely zero intention of letting any of his victims get away, even through death, and completely loses it when they actually manage it, whereas Caine understands how much the performers want to leave the game, even if he doesn't understand how that works, and is attempting to create an exit simply because he thinks they'll appreciate it. Cheshire Cat Grin: Perpetually sports a wide, toothy grin to tie into his trouble-making personality. Jumping spider: a type of spider that jumps and could be used as a Halloween decoration or costume.

Doomed Predecessor: Kaufmo was looking for the exit door before Pomni, abstracting because he couldn't find it. In a cruel twist, Pomni "successfully" finds the door but discovers it doesn't actually lead to anything. Voiced by: Alex Rochon (English) Other dubs Rodo Balderas (Spanish), Guilherme Briggs (Brazilian Portuguese), Max Mann (Russian), Soichiro Sugawara (Japanese), Ralph Ernest Francia (Filipino), Muhammad Nur (Indonesian) Cannot Tell a Joke: Implied: Gangle feels terribly guilty for not laughing at his jokes and Ragatha admits she couldn't fake a convincing laugh at them herself. Not even the two kindest (and two of the sanest) characters of the lot could find humor in whatever he was telling.

Contact

Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Pomni's avatar has (asymmetrical) eyelashes and bangs that frame her face but is otherwise androgynous.

Jerkass: He pulls very mean-spirited stunts on his human companions, such as tripping Ragatha and shoving Gangle for no particular reason. Gooseworx also describes him as "irredeemable" on her Tumblr. What Is Going On?: As a Naïve Newcomer to the Digital Circus, she asks questions about her situation repeatedly since she has no clue what the Digital Circus is about. At the end of the pilot, the fake exit doesn't help her situation either. Everyone Has Standards: When he saw Kaufmo being abstracted, he makes no joke about it, and even goes as far as to get Gangle and Kinger to safety while downplaying the situation to make sure they don't freak out. Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Her presence as a new member in the Circus unintentionally develops conflict in the pilot as Ragatha is encouraged to have Pomni meet Kaufmo and Caine is encouraged to create the "Gather the Gloinks" adventure also leading to Zooble getting captured. Meeting Kaufmo leads to Ragatha's avatar getting damaged due to his abstraction and Caine's disappearance for the adventure prevents Ragatha from getting healed until Pomni gets his attention by accidentally entering the Void through the last of a series of "exit" doors.

Early-Bird Cameo: A vocal variant. His off-screen voice is heard in Bubble's teaser, released days before his own. Freaky costumes are all about the details. This world is terrifying enough as it is; if you hope to scare the pants off your pals, you had better be willing to go the extra mile nowadays. So if you’re looking for the creepiest accessory ever, this Psycho Jester Cane will be happy to serve you. In fact, it’s a little too eager to find its way into your possession (and into your house, at night)... Although there may not be as many Halloween-related words beginning with the letter J, there are still some great selections that are sure to add a creepy atmosphere to your celebration.
