Crud Products XL Front Fender 6. Crud Products XL Front Fender Pricey but worth it if you need to remove/attach frequently Yes, these cost a lot and do the same job as the SKS Chromoplastics, but they are very lovely to look at. Enough to make rainy days seem a bit brighter. There are three widths available, and these 37mm wide mudguards are able to accommodate up to a 30mm tire. They looked in proportion when using a 28mm tire and there was a good amount of space to the side of the tire. To prevent the aluminium from damaging your fork, the guard is given a pinched section that is narrow enough to slot between your fork legs, while remaining wide enough to not affect tyre clearance. This is great if your braze-on mount is on the front of your fork crown, but for anyone whose mounting point is hidden behind, the pinch is positioned incorrectly, so a bit of aluminium bending may be required.

Once installed, both will stay securely in place, while further removal and refitting is a less involved process than initial setup. If the answer to either of these questions is no, you’re more than likely looking at clip-on guards – although it is possible to fit full guards to bikes without mounting points by using P-clips (available from DIY stores, but look for ones with rubber linings to protect delicate frames). Length and style Bike fenders are great for rainy or muddy rides, and can be popped on and off depending on conditions. There are several varieties of fenders to choose from, with models intended for different attachment points, sizing, and varying styles of bike. There are smaller, lighter models as well as more full-coverage ones, depending on conditions and your preferred style of riding. Some bikes come with fenders, and others you’ll have to buy aftermarket and install yourself. That’s thanks to a full wrap of the tyre, protecting bike and rider from road grit and grime, durability provided by the hammered alloy material and the ability to work with a wide range of different tyres and wheel sizes, too. There’s a shiny stainless steel version available as well. The SKS Raceblade Pro XL Stealth Series guards tip the scales at 380 grams, when weighed with the rubber attachment straps. They are compatible with 700c wheels and tire widths of up to 32mm. The front fender provides a coverage of 565mm and the rear 730mm.

If your road bike doesn't have mudguard mounts, there are still a lot of mudguards options available to you. Most riders tend to opt for both front and rear mudguards for greater protection, though there’s no reason why you couldn’t run just one or the other. Three types of gravel mudguard The guard is pre-folded into a V-shape and is simply secured by inserting one end under your saddle (it works with any standard saddle). Requiring zero tools and only a modicum of intelligence, at 38cm long, this lightweight option offers pretty limited protection against road gunk. Wet and muddy conditions can hamper your road cycling experience, covering both you and your bike in debris from tyre spray. It’s a design that makes fitting and removing the guards themselves a doddle. There’s no need for tools or fixing mounts, and by following the easy-to-understand instructions provided on the box, both mudguards can be in place within minutes.

Where you’re planning on riding will have some bearing on what type of mudguards to look for. Portland Design Works Fitting is easier than ever, using a simple notched rubber strap, and adjustment is a doddle, too, with eight 2.5mm hex bolts on the stays allowing you to change the height and angle. It took us just a few minutes to set them up from scratch. Just make sure to add some electrical tape to your frame and fork first if you want to keep your paint pristine. The worse the conditions you ride in, the more you’re likely to benefit from long-coverage mudguards.

There are a few options to choose from when it comes to mudguards, and which of these is right for your bike depends on the amount of protection you're needing - as well as what will practically fit your bike frame. Clip-on mudguards don’t require the frame to have eyelets or long-reach brake callipers, or extra clearance. Instead, they attach to the frame using simple fastenings like rubber bands, Velcro or zip ties. This gives far more versatility than full-length mudguards as you aren’t hindered by bike choice, and it means you can keep riding your favourite road bike through the winter if you want to.We hope that the information we’ve outlined in this guide will help you make a smart decision on which mudguards to buy- potentially enabling you to shop by bike type if, for example, you’re looking for gravel bike mudguards or cyclocross mudguards specifically.
