A stage adaptation of the novel by Rachel Wagstaff and Duncan Abel made its world premiere in The Courtyard Theatre at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 12 May to 9 June 2018. It stars Jill Halfpenny as Rachel Watson and is directed by Joe Murphy. [44] Feldman, Lucy (10 October 2016). "What Paula Hawkins Thinks of 'The Girl on the Train' Movie". The Wall Street Journal. Archived from the original on 27 July 2022. 'Of course I was nervous,' says Paula Hawkins, author of 'The Girl on the Train', which has sold more than 20 million copies around the world.' Pike makes deft work of these unreliable narrators who span several generations, imbuing their voices with a defensiveness and vulnerability born from past disappointments and trauma. Miriam is forever second-guessing the judgment of strangers who she knows see her as a lonely busybody, while Laura is chaotic and brittle-sounding, convinced that none of the calamities that befall her are ever her fault. In particular, Pike captures the melancholy of the widowed Irene, whose frail appearance and occasional mishaps prompt others to condescend and patronise rather than treat her as a sentient adult. This being a Hawkins novel, the plot twists are sprinkled liberally to keep listeners on their toes, though the story is sustained by the humanity of these expertly narrated characters whose secrets are slowly brought to the surface. once again, Allende's writing style enthralls me with her moving story about joy, sadness, deceit, but most of all, love.

As René grew older, her family relationships grew more and more complex with only a fine line between love and hate, condemnation and forgiveness. Saunders did a commendable job having René walk that line in ways that felt very real. Mesure, Susie (3 September 2021). I wondered what would become of Paula Spencer at the end of The Woman Who....". It intrigued me for many years, and so why I didn't read this book earlier is a bit of a surprise to myself. A whirlwind of adventures ensues as Xanthe heeds the call of a beautiful antique wedding dress that sings to her. She's had this ability her whole life. Parineeti Chopra's Hindi remake of The Girl on The Train goes on floors; makers aim for 2020 release". Firstpost. 4 August 2019 . Retrieved 6 August 2019. René – Though The Distance Home is the story of an entire family, it is fully told from René’s perspective and I found her to be a very relatable, if not always likeable, character. I am Chilean, I come from a 'long petal of sea and wine and snow,' as Pablo Neruda described my country, and you're from there, too, Paula, even though you bear the indelible stamp of the Caribbean where you spent the years of your childhood."

Siegel, Tatiana (28 September 2016). " 'Girl on the Train' Author Shoots Down 'Gone Girl' Comparisons". The Hollywood Reporter. All the characters here are brilliantly painted by Doyle. This is a story of hope and redemption. We get the feeling that Paula will prevail despite her horrendous past of being brutalised and humiliated.

A family saga set in the American West, about sibling rivalry, dark secrets, and a young girl's struggle with freedom and artistic desire.

This is an amazing read. I thought it was even better than The Woman Who Walked Into Doors. Paula is a brilliant character. There are no holds barred about her frailties and her issues. She’s nearly 48 and is an alcoholic who is on the dry. Leanne, her daughter, daughter of an alcoholic, is a sad and damaged character who is becoming an alcoholic herself. Leanne has few friends, and suffers from terrible excema. There is a lot of tension between Paula and Leanne that’s very well depicted by Doyle. Meet the Cast: The girls from Paula Hawkins' "The Girl On The Train" (Exclusive Audio Clips)". Books on Tape . Retrieved 1 January 2017. Isabel Allende is a witch! you will feel like she is a kind witch that believes in everything in the world, however fantastical it might be, she has no religion, but she believes in all fantastical religions! Truly a charming individual! Ballet in South Dakota – I don’t want to offend anyone from South Dakota, but ballet just isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a small town in The Mount Rushmore State. Yet, ballet played a huge role in The Distance Home. Leon, René’s older brother, was the first to start in ballet in the hunt to find a place for him to succeed. And, succeed he did. He was soon joined by René, later by younger sister, Jayne and finally even their mother, Eve. Ballet became a huge part of their lives, very nearly taking over. It was an escape that offered freedom and a sense of normalcy sadly missing from their lives. But, for Leon especially, it came with very high costs. René watched Leon’s demise as her own status rose.

The landscape of the time and place in South Dakota are so well described, I felt like I was there. There are glimpses, too of the Native Americans of the area, a little of the history. This is such a sad story and I found it difficult to read at times . Yet, there are brief moments of caring and love in this family. For me these moments were overshadowed by the damage done, an uneven dichotomy. A well written debut novel, that in spite of the sadness, will have me watching for what Paula Saunders will do in the future. After reading the first novel in this series, I found it to have a bit of Alice Hoffman flare, mixed up with a large portion of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels. The third novel continues along this vein. She meets a man at a bottle depository. They start a tentative relationship. He’s a bit strange, and Paula struggles with being with him, as she (understandably) struggles with everything. In the days after I finished reading Paula Byrne’s wonderfully attentive and touching biography of Pym, I thought about this bite often: its unexpectedness; its daring; the way that, with a single act, she wrestled some kind of power for herself. Didn’t Sylvia Plath bite Ted Hughes on the cheek on the night they first met? And yet, who ever talks of Plath and Pym in the same breath? (I once spoke of Pym and Stevie Smith, of whose novels she was a fan, together at a conference, and even that pairing – they were both famous spinsters – had the young academics in the front row rolling their superior eyes.) And as René sat in her bed that night, looking across the hall at Leon’s closed bedroom door, she couldn’t help but wonder where all the hurt and anger went after something like that. Did it just disappear, as a person grew older, dissolving in a mist of resignation and forgetfulness?”

What I loved most about 'Paula Spencer' is how Doyle used dialogue and inner thoughts/monologues to really drive the story and bring us, in a very palpable and revelatory way, into Paula Spencer's life. Paula is a fifty-something, recovering alcoholic, mother of four who works as a cleaner in Dublin during Ireland's Celtic tiger era. The story revolves around how Paula's alcoholic past still seems to be shaping and challenging her relationships with her family, especially her children. Casting Featured Male Role in DreamWorks Pictures 'The Girl on the Train' Starring Emily Blunt & Chris Evans". AuditionsFree.com. 22 October 2015 . Retrieved 6 December 2015. In the letter Paula wrote her family on her honeymoon, with the proviso that it was not to be read until after her death, she appears to have foreseen her coma, and her mother's refusal to let her die: Allende proceeds to write about her professional adventures, from her work for the United Nations to her work as a journalist. During the 1960s, Allende relates how she developed into a feminist liberal while traveling and greatly expanding her social life. When she attempts to interviewFirst off Roddy had abandoned the first person telling of the story which made Paula Spencer ‘s initial book so believable and the emotions so convincing. Also the third person story telling is chronological rather than the switching from the past to the present so that the story was not showing us the course and effect of someone’s conditioning, which was so successful in the first novel.
