This is an amazing read. I thought it was even better than The Woman Who Walked Into Doors. Paula is a brilliant character. There are no holds barred about her frailties and her issues. She’s nearly 48 and is an alcoholic who is on the dry. Leanne, her daughter, daughter of an alcoholic, is a sad and damaged character who is becoming an alcoholic herself. Leanne has few friends, and suffers from terrible excema. There is a lot of tension between Paula and Leanne that’s very well depicted by Doyle. Yet, ballet played a huge role in The Distance Home. Leon, René’s older brother, was the first to start in ballet in the hunt to find a place for him to succeed. And, succeed he did. He was soon joined by René, later by younger sister, Jayne and finally even their mother, Eve. Ballet became a huge part of their lives, very nearly taking over. It was an escape that offered freedom and a sense of normalcy sadly missing from their lives. But, for Leon especially, it came with very high costs. René watched Leon’s demise as her own status rose.

The landscape of the time and place in South Dakota are so well described, I felt like I was there. There are glimpses, too of the Native Americans of the area, a little of the history. This is such a sad story and I found it difficult to read at times . Yet, there are brief moments of caring and love in this family. For me these moments were overshadowed by the damage done, an uneven dichotomy. A well written debut novel, that in spite of the sadness, will have me watching for what Paula Saunders will do in the future. After reading the first novel in this series, I found it to have a bit of Alice Hoffman flare, mixed up with a large portion of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander novels. The third novel continues along this vein. She meets a man at a bottle depository. They start a tentative relationship. He’s a bit strange, and Paula struggles with being with him, as she (understandably) struggles with everything. In the days after I finished reading Paula Byrne’s wonderfully attentive and touching biography of Pym, I thought about this bite often: its unexpectedness; its daring; the way that, with a single act, she wrestled some kind of power for herself. Didn’t Sylvia Plath bite Ted Hughes on the cheek on the night they first met? And yet, who ever talks of Plath and Pym in the same breath? (I once spoke of Pym and Stevie Smith, of whose novels she was a fan, together at a conference, and even that pairing – they were both famous spinsters – had the young academics in the front row rolling their superior eyes.) What I loved most about 'Paula Spencer' is how Doyle used dialogue and inner thoughts/monologues to really drive the story and bring us, in a very palpable and revelatory way, into Paula Spencer's life. Paula is a fifty-something, recovering alcoholic, mother of four who works as a cleaner in Dublin during Ireland's Celtic tiger era. The story revolves around how Paula's alcoholic past still seems to be shaping and challenging her relationships with her family, especially her children.
