About this deal

I’ve seen cordless vacuum cleaners with more power in handheld mode, but the figures here suggest that this vacuum cleaner is good for most jobs. We found that the Hoover HL5 is loud, however, after we measured between 78dB - 82dB, from using the wand in portable mode to using the motorized floor head on the floor, using our decibel reader on our phones. It is also mighty heavy and the bin had a tendency to lift off when we tried to lug the upright vacuum up the stairs.

This vacuum cleaner can be assembled in three different ways, adjusting where the main vacuum cleaner sits for each one, giving more comfort whether you’re using it handheld, as a regular cleaner or to get more reach. Design and featuresIs once a week really enough to keep your floors as clean as possible, or should you be vacuuming every couple of days? For those without one of the best robot vacuums on hand to help out, it's a hard question to answer.

Wall Mount: The innovative design of the Triflex cordless vacuum enables you to charge it in your preferred configuration – be it with the PowerUnit in the upper or lower position – making the vacuum instantly available to handle life’s unforeseen spills. Miele’s cordless vacuum cleaners blend the reliable power of the traditional corded model with the considerable convenience of the wireless form. The Triflex cordless vacuum cleaner features an exclusive repositionable power unit that adapts to your everyday household needs. Whether you need comfort for prolonged vacuuming, flexibility for those hard-to-reach spaces, or portability for furniture and other areas, the Triflex transforms to achieve the best results. Combine the pioneering base unit with intelligent technology that automatically detects hard floors and soft carpeting and a straightforward range of user-centric attachments - the result is a cordless vacuum built for you.An innovative and powerful cordless vacuum would be nothing without Miele’s renowned filtration capability. The Hygiene filter reliably prevents 99.9% of dust and fine particulate from re-entering the atmosphere while cleaning – superior air quality means a safer home environment for you and your loved ones. The hygiene filter is designed to last the lifetime of your device, no need to replace or worry about quality deterioration over time. The power doesn't deplete when in use, but you will notice the battery indicator light blinking for a minute-or-so before it cuts out. This is useful because it gives you just enough time to run down the stairs to find that spare battery, which you will need when vacuuming a three-bed house from top to bottom. How many times a week you need to vacuum your floors to keep them dust and allergen free is something that's been a concern since the first vacuum cleaners appeared on the market. The HEPA¹ lifetime filter captures and filters 99.999%² of all microscopic particles and allergens, removing them from the air. This maintenance free filter is perfect for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. What’s important with day-to-day cleaning is the power of the floor head. The motorised roller is designed to agitate dirt, so that it can easily be lifted away. A more powerful head can make up for lower suction, as was the case here.

We attended the official launch of the Hoover HL5 in fall 2022. It was one of two upright vacuum cleaners being launched; this one and the pet version. The only difference between the two in terms of spec is that the pet version comes with the addition of a motorized pet tool. If looks are important to you, the Pets edition is available in a yellow/blue colorway, whereas this Homes edition is in a grey/red. First, there’s Comfort Mode, which puts the main vacuum cleaner close to the floor head, so the main weight of the vacuum cleaner is closer to the floor. That effectively makes the Triflex a cordless upright cleaner in a similar way to the Shark ICZ300UKT. Like that vacuum cleaner, the Miele Triflex HX2 Pro can stand up by itself in this mode. That’s quite a time saver, as I could just leave the vacuum cleaner every time I needed to pause vacuuming, say to move something out of the way. We recommend vacuuming most floors once a week while increasing this to twice a week in high-traffic areas such as hallways and doorways. Especially if you have carpet, as the longer dust is left, the more it becomes embedded in the fibers making it hard to thoroughly clean. We were disappointed there were no LEDs on the floor cleaning head - a feature offered by some vacuums on this list - making cleaning easier when cleaning in dark spaces under furniture. It's also bulky, meaning it may be a problem to store. That said, this is the best on the market right now when it comes to upright vacuums. The floorhead also features a light strip along its front edge, which we found super-useful for lighting up areas under furniture, or revealing finer dirt on the hard floor in lower lit areas of the house. Note that this is only present on the Triflex HX2 Pro and Triflex HX2Cat & Dog models. Miele also includes a separate Hardfloor Care soft roller for use on hard floors and a Carpet Care roller brush for more delicate carpets and rugs. It does mean that you'll need to stop vacuuming to remove and swap out the bristle roller brush, but they're a good option for those who are particularly concerned about protecting their floors. The floor cleaner here is similar to those seen on Dyson cleaners, in that it automatically detects the floor type and reduces rotational speed on hard floors to save energy and prolong battery life. However, in the Trfle HX2 Pro, this feature is only available on the Eco and Max power settings with the Multi-Floor XXL Electrobrush is fitted. In the box, you'll also find a crevice nozzle, dusting brush, upholstery nozzle. Note that the vacuum's 0.5-litre dust container is small. Our upstairs wool carpets are relatively new, so we found that we were having to empty the container at least once between vacuuming that floor and the stairs and ground floor. The dust container also proved a little fiddly to empty; you need to remove the dust canister from the main unit and then twist open the lid to remove the filter and dirt.

Meanwhile, Upright vacuums are bulkier and heavier, making them harder to push around your floors. As you'd expect given the name, the floor cleaning head is attached to a tall unit that holds the motor and dust canister or bag, with a handle usually at waist height or slightly above - so you can clean your floors without having to hunch over. We also look at how easy it is to convert into a handheld or more portable cleaner, the valuable tools and accessories it comes with to clean edges or removes pet hair, and whether the instructions are clear and concise. Best upright vacuum FAQs What to consider when buying an upright vacuum Although the most expensive Miele cordless vacuum we've tested is not cheap by any means, it's still significantly cheaper than the priciest Samsung cordless vacuum. However, Samsung Bespoke Jet comes with a lot of useful extras such as the wet cleaning mode and an additional battery. Top-end Miele cordless vacuums have additional features such as the HEPA filter (Miele Triflex HX1 Pro, Triflex HX1 Cat and Dog, Triflez HX2), LED headlights (Miele Triflex HX1 Pro, Triflex HX1 Cat and Dog, Triflez HX2) and a spare lithium-ion battery (Triflex HX1 Pro, Triflex HX2 Pro). However, our reviewer was disappointed there was only one power level, as she’d like to have been able to adjust the suction force, particularly on deep pile carpets, as you may find the vacuum hard to manoeuvre. It’s also a bulky appliance, which may cause storage issues for some. Miele's tech made the Trifle HX2 Pro a dream to use when transitioning from carpets to hard floors, with the level of suction remaining consistent. Manually switching between the speed settings was just as easy. We preferred the Eco and Max settings, since we have long-pile wool carpet in our home; the Min setting just didn't cut it for us. However, when switching settings, it took a second or so for the vacuum cleaner to power up or change gears – enough time to be noticeable – so this vacuum isn't as responsive as some other vacuum cleaners we've tested. While it doesn't have quite as many extras, the Miele Triflex HX2 still comes with a generous number of tools. The main floorhead is an electro brush, but it also comes with an upholstery nozzle, crevice tool, a carpet brush bar and a separate nozzle holder for storing all accessories and tools.
