About this deal

Bags 1 and 2 build the locomotive, based on the real-life Great Western Railway Hall Class, no. 5972 “Olton Hall”. The most basic differentiator of any steam locomotive is the wheel arrangement, and the set gets it right, and reasonably proportionate as well. Olton Hall is a 4-6-0: four leading or pilot wheels, six driving wheels (connected to the drive shaft, in other words, powered), and no trailing wheels (when present, these would be under the firebox or cab). The Hogwarts Express measures 46cm in length and consists of the locomotive, a coal tender and one passenger carriage. Trains often look somewhat awkward without sufficient carriages but including just one here was probably the right decision as additional passenger carriages would have increased the cost of the set, without adding very much play value. Personally, I think the train looks impressive with only a single carriage. The pilot wheels, at the front of the locomotive, are the least successful compromise in my judgement. It feels as though the need for those wheels to be able to pivot independently of the main frame was recognized, but there wasn’t a solution that gave it enough stability, so the choice was made to secure it in place, but also allow flipping it over for when you need to turn? It’s the first time I can remember seeing something like this in a LEGO train, and I have to guess that the pilot will simply be discarded or go missing in a lot of kids’ play.

Swoop a Dementor™ into the carriage to torment Harry, then cast a spell with a wand to send it away!Furthermore, the whistles which should be situated in front of the cab are absent. Fortunately, the cab itself looks brilliant, with the locomotive number on the outside and ample mechanical detail inside. The cables surrounding the throttle lever and coal box seem particularly effective, while studs are provided to secure a minifigure. Several new hair pieces have been created for the Wizarding World theme, including Hermione's wavy style. This reddish brown element is cast in a hard plastic and looks fantastic in relation to the source material, featuring some lovely textured detail and hanging naturally over the minifigure's shoulders. The head is nicely decorated with two different expressions and Hermione carries a dark tan wand, a spare of which is also included.

I had high expectations for 75955 Hogwarts Express and am glad to report that it does not disappoint. This train looks more faithful to the source material than any previous rendition and includes plenty of realistic details that one might find on any steam locomotive. In fact, this is probably my favourite of the steam trains which LEGO have produced since 10194 Emerald Night was released in 2009, almost ten years ago!Another interesting parts decision is that the whole train uses technic connectors between cars, instead of the magnet couplers that have been used in other train sets through last year’s. Maybe it’s a cost saving measure? Or maybe the magnets would have looked awkward with the tiny coaches with a single wheelset at each end. It’s a little unfortunate since as a British train the Hogwarts Express coaches should have the buffers that have always been molded in to LEGO’s magnet couplers. Includes 5 minifigures: Harry Potter™, Ron Weasley™, Hermione Granger™, Remus Lupin and the Trolley Witch, plus Dementor™ and Scabbers™ figures. While the doors are functional for minifigures, actually reaching inside the vestibules is difficult. Sections of the roof can be removed, but they provide very limited access. Unfortunately, I am unsure how this could have been avoided because the doors must be secured, so detachable wall panels or larger roof panels would be impractical. biggest - : a Lego train not compatible with any other Lego train. Because that's what Lego is about: modularity, compatibility. They actually should have included a warning on the box: caution not compatible with Lego City trains. I wouldn't have noticed this without reading the review just from the store description and the official images - who counts studs to see if this train has a different gauge from all the other trains?

Trans-yellow lanterns are cleverly recessed in the walls, but undoubtedly most impressive are the sliding doors. These printed doors include metallic silver handles and different colours on either side, with reddish brown wood facing the corridor and dark tan wood in the passenger compartments. However, the doors can slide in both directions and I would have appreciated a stopper to prevent this. I love the sand blue seats situated along the right side of the coach, leaving enough room for a narrow passage on the left. The armrests do not allow the Honeydukes Express trolley to pass when the wall panel is attached but it does fit between the central seats and there is plenty of space when the panel has been removed. I was slightly concerned that minifigures with short legs would appear awkward in these chairs but they actually look alright in my opinion, almost matching standard seated figures. This setup uses the old 9 volt system. I do not recommend this unless you already have all the parts for a 9v setup. It’s very expensive to get them so many years after the system was retired. Two unidentified Hogwarts students complete the minifigure selection, belonging to the lesser-represented houses. The generic Hufflepuff Student is older and includes standard legs with his yellow-trimmed Hufflepuff robes, while the younger Ravenclaw Student features the same triple-moulded legs as Hermione Granger from her first year.

Another axle links the tender to the passenger carriage. The distance between sections of the train appears realistic and the opposing buffers are excellent, although I wonder whether there was potential to include a brake hose at this scale. However, actually attaching that hose would likely be challenging. Ignite the magic within your child with LEGO® Harry Potter building toys and model kits. This enchanting collection invites young witches, wizards and even muggles, to go on countless Wizarding World adventures, inspired by the beloved series. I’m sure I’ll like the set more when I’ve built it myself, but I don’t think it’ll ever make sense. " Unusually, this set contains several repeated characters, reflecting their changing appearances across the series. These versions of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are based upon The Prisoner of Azkaban, so now incorporate medium legs. Even though previous renditions of the Hogwarts Express have often taken inspiration from this film, these minifigures are unique.
