About this deal

You will need to clear away any furniture or other items that might be in the way and cover the floor with a drop cloth. I am currently fixing up our home with a rustic farmhouse style and I share all my home decor and DIY inspiration. My aim is to inspire people to make a house a home on a budget which involves lots of fun, creative projects. Christmas is traditionally a time of excess and we all love to buy an extra decoration or two to add to our collection but to avoid spending out on more plastic ornaments, we’ve come up with a few ideas for making your own decorations on a limited budget and as environmentally-friendly as possible. Decorating baubles with gilding leaf is a wonderful way to bring sparkle to Christmas styling and is easier to do than it looks. We love this make idea from Hobbycraft.

Equally easy to do is our twig tree decorated with sprayed pine cones. Screw small metal eyelets into the top of the cones to hang them. If you want a more natural look, lightly spritz the cones and twigs with white Chalk paint to give the effect of a light dusting of snow. Choose a spray paint specifically designed for use on plastic surfaces. This type of paint is more likely to adhere to the synthetic material and provide a long-lasting finish. For any bare wood surface, always use primer. PlastiKote Twist & Spray Primer is ideal. If your item has already been spray painted with PlastiKote, you can just put your new colour over the top but if you want to ‘kill’ the existing colour, ie if it is dark and you’re going light, or you’re not sure what paint or varnish was previously use, priming will give you a good base to start on. Priming also gives added durability. Additionally, spray paint can be difficult to control and may not provide a consistent or professional finish on the tree.If the tree is made of a more porous or less smooth material, the paint may not adhere well and may not look as smooth or even as it would on a tree made of a smoother material. However, you should keep in mind that the paint may not adhere as well to the plastic material as it would to a real tree or other porous surfaces.

You’ll need a clean glass jar and lid, a small ornament (a little Christmas dec, cone or seed head for example), a can of PlastiKote spray paint (Fast Dry Enamel) and some sweets or chocolates. A metallic accent lifts any colour scheme and PlastiKote Fast Dry Enamel comes in Gold Leaf, Copper, Antique Gold, Silver (Chrome), Rose Gold and Brass. Available in 100ml cans, a little goes a long way and using (free) leaves means you won’t break the bank updating your decor. To apply primer, simply use a paintbrush or roller to apply an even layer to the tree. Once the primer is dry, you can then proceed with your chosen spray paint color. Spray paint Christmas tree A place name holder is not always the first thing you think of when planning your festive meals so this is a great idea for a last minute make. Simply spray cones to match your theme using PlastiKote Fast Dry Enamel spray paint. With many colours to choose from plus some stunning metallics and glitters, one can will be enough to do lots of cones. Go bold with colour or just spritz the tips with white spray paint and silver glitter to give a frosted appearance. Use a sweeping motion to apply the paint to the tree, starting at the top and working your way down. Make sure to overlap your strokes to ensure even coverage.Once you’re happy with the way your tree looks, let the paint dry completely. This may take a few hours or even overnight. Use PlastiKote Chalk spray paint in Vintage White to create a White Christmas theme to your decorations. Chalk spray paint is water-based with 90% less solvents than conventional spray paint and therefore much kinder to the environment. So, go for a brisk walk in the countryside to collect pine cones, leaves, ivy, twigs and you’ll be set to create your own winter wonderland.

When it comes to protecting yourself from the harmful effects of spray paint fumes, it is important to wear the proper protective gear. We had a plain wooden step stool that is now on its third incarnation! From bare wood, we masked off the bottom two thirds and sprayed the top White Satin from our Twist & Spray paint range to use as a bedside table in a guest room. A year or so down the line, it was re-purposed as a useful surface in the bathroom adding a pop of colour with Orange Gloss. When the décor changed in the bathroom, the step stool was sprayed with Mediterranean Blue Gloss to be used as, well, steps!Sarah sent us this lovely chair makeover. It was a first time project and we were thrilled to hear that it had inspired her to do more. I spray painted three bottles white, distressed one with fine sandpaper and printed letters on the others. Fourth, rinse the sponge or cloth in the spray bottle of water. Fifth, wring out the sponge or cloth. Sixth, wipe down the area again with a wet sponge or cloth. The most common issue I see is trying to paint when it is cold. Make sure you have warm (70 to 75 degrees F) temperatures and that your tree and paint are both warm when painting.
