About this deal

Well, tyres and their associated pressures make such a massive difference to the ride quality of any bike that it’s of utmost importance to keep them consistent, especially when testing bikes. It’s why we fit the same control tyres to all of our test bikes at mbr. The chart below should give you another estimate on starting mountain bike tyre pressure for DH, Enduro, Trail and XC mountain biking. While making this MTB tire calculator we took into account the most most common factors: rider weight, tire diameter, rider experience, tire width, tubeless/tubes, terrain roughness, and riding type. We then cross-referenced the data from top tire manufacturers with our own real-life riding experience, aiming to offer the most accurate mountain bike tire pressure calculator we could.

You don’t have to be an expert to use this pressure gauge successfully. It is designed to be easily used when you are exploring rough terrains on your MTB.

Too little air may result in rolling or what we refer to as ‘burping’ the tyre. Burping happens when you corner your bike too hard for the air pressure in the tyres. The resulting ‘psst!’ shows that the tyre is deforming too much under load and letting a little air out through the bead and wheel rim. Pressure gauges come in 3 types. Dial pressure gauges are the simplest ones. The screen of the dial features numbers that you can easily read. Although there is nothing fancy about dial pressure gauges, they are extremely reliable. They might not provide the most accurate reading, especially if the numbers are small. Most bikes come fitted with clincher tyres. These tyres have a bead that grips to the rim to keep them in place, and they require an inner tube.

From our examples, hopefully you can start to work out what’s right for you. It’s worth noting that the differences in pressures look relatively small – a couple of psi here or there. However, we’ve found that the bigger the tyre volume, the more noticeable small changes are. Conversely, if you’re riding on smoother terrain, or perhaps at lower speeds (think steep muddy and rooty tech trails), lower pressures will allow the tyre to deform more, enabling it to better mould to the ground’s shape, boosting grip. If you want to be particular about the accuracy of a pressure gauge, then you can select one based on its accuracy grade. There are eight grades for analog gauges and 12 for digital ones, ranging from commercial grade to laboratory grade. The right tyre pressure for you and your bike will provide a balance of comfort, grip, puncture protection and rolling speed. Steve Behr / Our Media

TIRE PRESSURE REVOLUTIONIZED

Tubeless set-up: Start at 25psi and adjust accordingly. Lighter riders may opt for lower around 20psi, while 30psi is a good starting pressure for heavier riders and e-bikes.

So, what tire pressure should you use? If you’re simply after a setting that will work well in most cases, or a great starting point then our experienced testers recommend a base setting of:We’ve touched on it slightly, but let’s take a closer look at why tyre pressure matters. As you’ll see, there are lots of factors, and finding the right pressure is often a matter of balancing these out. We’d recommend using a digital pressure gauge to adjust your tyre pressure. It’s a really handy tool to get accurate readings and also enables you to fine-tune pressure out on the trail if you’re really trying to get things dialled in. We’ve got a round-up of the best tyre pressure gauges. Adjust the pressure and ride again. Compare how the ride felt this time and follow this process until you’re comfortable with how your tyres are inflated. Road bike tyre pressure If you need to inflate your tyre, attach a suitable pump to the valve and increase the tyre pressure in small increments.
