A 2018 Most Anticipated Young Adult book from debut author Adrienne Young, Sky in the Deep is part Wonder Woman, part Vikings—and all heart. I did feel like the idea of the mission, the way it was initiated was well-developed and thought out. I feel like when you are writing something futuristic like this, you can really go anywhere with it. Kitasei's take was creative and frankly, believable in a frightening way.

I closed my eyes as the prayer found a familiar place on my tongue. Take my love to my mother and my brother. Ask them to keep watch for me. Tell them my soul follows behind you. I sank to my knees, my head swimming. He fell beside me, hands running over my body and fingers sliding over blood and sweat-soaked skin. He looked me over carefully, dread pushing its way onto his face. Seventy-something out of the eighty crew members, are just invisible ghosts to the author, and in turn, to the reader. The writing, though, was (unexpectedly) very YA. And by that, I don’t mean that the intended audiences were young adults; but that it was written by a young adult. The captain is dead, the new one enlists Asuka to investigate. There's a saboteur among the eighty crew members.A woman leapt from the tree line, but her shriek was cut off as Mýra came from the side, plowing into her with a knife. She dragged it across the woman’s throat and dropped her where she stood, falling into step with me again as I ran. I’m a Texan-born California girl who loves yoga, food, coffee & wine! This other Asuka was the shadow she would rip from her feet and leave behind on the crumbling asphalt roads and faded lines. She willed it to be so.
