About this deal

Polly; Emmy's friend who isn't an Insta presence but is an old friend, bridesmaid, supportive person etc was a wonderful character. She had too little space. I really wanted a bit more of Polly. At the end, she was reduced to 'the person who screams at Emmy the bad effects of social media'. I wish she had more purpose. I was so curious about the mysteries in this one. We read the story from many different viewpoints and they are all usually one step ahead. It kept me guessing until the very end. What’s the Story About Overall, it has a very good second half. I'd class this as a good slow burner mystery but not so much a thriller.

The second half is much better than the first and some things you learn pull you up sharply and make you reevaluate what you think you know. There are some excellent, dramatic and almost surreal scenes towards the end and a couple of those are doozies! I like the end-justice served. First. TRIGGERS: EVERYTHING related to fertility and babies - multiple miscarriages, multiple abortions, fertility treatments, infertility, death of an infant, motherhood and some condescension of all of the above. The second narrator is her husband, Dan, a washed-up writer who is quietly resentful of his wife's success but nonetheless claims the moral high ground in his narration. He thinks the whole thing is ridiculous even though it's clear that he'd like to be the one in the limelight. He mostly plays the role of stay-at-home-dad/voice of reason, and the constant push and pull between him and Emmy is clearly leading to some strain. But as the first guests arrive, the weekend soon proves deadly – because it turns out that even the most beautiful people can keep the ugliest secrets and, in a world where reputation is everything, they'll do anything to keep it.

If you are interested, Ellery Lloyd does have a new book coming out March 31, 2022 called The Club. I really dug People Like Her, but this one was just crap. The premise here is about – you guessed it – a club . . . Still, I try to read most of the celebrity book club selections and since I also had an ARC, I decided to give The Club a chance. And I’m glad I did. For one, it’s more of a mystery, which is totally my speed, but also this book is entertaining. Although, it’s also quite dark in several aspects too. She becomes more vulnerable and gets herself into a real danger closer to her family, whom she cares about. The author has raised critical questions about social media, technology, and celebrity life in this novel.

The big twist and person/reason behind it all was also so crazy. Though, it does highlight a very real issue of society putting ‘influencers’ on a pedestal and taking their word as gospel even though everything they’re posting and saying is due to a big pay cheque and staying ‘on brand.’This was quite an entertaining read for me. The characters were very interesting, their different motives were fascinating. The atmosphere and the setting both were superb. The pacing is the only downside of the story. I think the authors (Husband & Wife) did a pretty good job. The Island is located off the English coast, and the group can’t wait for it to be launched with a three-day party. The place is highly guarded, but behind it all, there is a lot of tension as every one of them has secrets they don’t want to be put in the open.
