According to the Thomas and Friends Writers' Bible, Fergus is suspicious of diesels, whom he considers “new fangled.” Cranky was later unloading a crate from a ship at Brendam, but accidentally dropped the crate to the ground. Fearing the contents inside of the crate were broken, Cranky hid the crate out of sight, though it was later found and taken to the Town Hall. But as he arrives, Salty and Harvey begin to ask him lots of questions about his past. Murdoch becomes annoyed and tells them both that he wants peace and quiet, and that he does not want to share a shed with chatterboxes. Harvey is upset, believing Murdoch is rude, while Salty tells him that they are only being friendly. In the Learning with Thomas short Thomas & Percy Learn About Recycling, Cranky is shown with a grabber attachment as opposed to his hook attachment.

Series 10 - Help From Your Friends ( cameo), Which Load for Rosie? ( cameo), What Makes Salty Happiest? ( cameo) and What is Henry Thinking? When Thomas is pushing the fish vans, the brake van has a light. But when Arthur takes the vans, the light is gone. When Emily plunges into the muddy flood, one of her crew is not seen in her cab; both of her crew are also completely absent when she leaves the farm with Trevor. Series 17 - Kevin's Cranky Friend, Steamie Stafford ( cameo), Henry's Hero ( cameo), Not Now, Charlie!, Too Many Fire Engines ( cameo), Santa's Little Engine, Away From the Sea, Gone Fishing ( does not speak), The Afternoon Tea Express ( cameo), The Smelly Kipper and No More Mr. Nice Engine ( cameo)

In the US and Canada, this episode was released before Emily's New Coaches and The Spotless Record, meaning the audience would not know who Emily and Arthur are unless they had the VHS/DVD release New Friends for Thomas and Other Adventures. An engine cries after getting into an accident; the first was the first series episode, Thomas, Terence and the Snow.

Salty asks, "Have you worked Marseille?". Marseille is a city in southern France known for its large harbour. Stopping at a signal, Percy sees Gordon, who is not surprised that Percy was told to collect a carpet, as he is just a small engine. Suddenly, the wind lifts up underneath the carpet, taking it into the air. Percy is now convinced that it is a magic carpet, but Gordon knows that it is just the wind and he departs to collect a coach for Allicia Botti. Then Murdoch passes Percy and the red carpet lands onto a flatbed in Murdoch's train. Percy gives chase to Murdoch, calling for him to wait. But Murdoch is too far ahead to hear Percy and carries on through Maron station. Percy, speeding through Maron, tells James that Murdoch has his magic carpet, but James tells him that magic carpets do not exist. Fergus knows the rulebook by heart, and his fussy catchphrase is "Do it right!" His insistence on doing everything absolutely according to the rules can annoy the other engines, but he is a decent engine at heart and will not hesitate to help others in trouble. He is also friendly to nearly everyone he meets.

Cranky also appeared in the magazine stories, Company for Cranky, Fish and Fog!, Fun With Friends, Sea-Bound Salty and The Camel Train. According to the talking My First Thomas toy of Neville, his favourite place to visit is the Ffarquhar Quarry. When Emily found herself stranded in muddy water, she sought Murdoch's assistance. As a peacemaker and problem solver, Murdoch guided Emily to safety by suggesting an alternative route through the valley. His wisdom and caring nature earned him the admiration and respect of the other engines. Braving the Noisy Sheep Emily Saves the World ( does not speak), Missing Gator, Don't Be Late, Percy!
