The Jam were seen as the centre of mod revival culture during the 1970s to the 1980s, and the lead singer of the band, Paul Weller, was seen as The Modfather. The band separated in 1982, following ten years active, and five years of success. Shortly after the band's break-up, Weller went on to form The Style Council, before embarking on a solo career and releasing his first studio album, which was self-titled, in 1992. In 2004ish, me and some members of the Splinters mailing list received these cover proofs and an anonymous note, reproduced here: — “There were some dedicated fans of The JAM in the New York offices of Polydor. When they got wind of Weller’s intention to break-up the band they assembled a farewell album – a singles collection. My friend Kyle Gilmore was involved in the project. They were really hoping to finally put The JAM over the top in the US… I think they even entertained fantasies of convincing Weller to continue the group if the LP was successful <..> they had the funky fan club version of Tales From The Riverbank and also got hold of the group recording of A Solid Bond In Your Heart, which was slated for the LP. This infuriated Weller and he stopped the album’s release. I don’t know if he had to file a legal injunction or if Polydor acquiesced without a fight, but the Beat Surrender long-player was put on the shelf. It’s a shame really, because it would have been a fitting, full-length salutation from The JAM.
