The case isn’t much larger than other affordable automatics that I’ve tested, but that bracelet… it’s an attention getter, and it also makes the 96A101 look much bigger than it really is. It looks awkwardly large on my wrists (7.25″ish around), and that’s almost entirely due to the bracelet. After removing the stem, the movement was removed from the case. The stem was then reinstalled to facilitate power let-down, etc. With the oscillating weight removed, it’s a simple matter to lay the movement down dial-up on a piece of pith wood and remove the hands (Figure 7). The dial retaining screws on the side of the movement are loosened (not removed) and the dial is gently coaxed away from the movement by inserting a thin screwdriver blade. Figure 8 shows the dial after removal.

Like others coming from Bulova, the massive casing of this model combined with brown leather straps, enhance the appearance of the watch.As regards to the materials Bulova employs, then watch cases are primarily of stainless steel, while a mineral crystal covers the dial. Sapphire crystal, one of the strongest in the industry, can be found from slightly pricier pieces. Other smaller collections, such as Harley-Davidson, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Grammy, are dedicated to the fans of Harleys, architecture, and the red carpet, accordingly. I’ve worn a lot of watches with stainless steel bracelets, and none of them have the feel that this one does. That’s not necessarily a good thing, though it also isn’t necessary a bad thing, either. It’s more a statement of fact.

Recent History My favourite of these has to be the precisionist series, they were introduced by Bulova in 2010. It’s a new type of quartz watch with a higher frequency crystal, 262 144 Hz, that’s eight times the current industry standard of 32 768 Hz. They have an accuracy of +/- 10 seconds per year and have a lovely smooth sweeping second hand, a feature lot of people looking for in high quality watches. Figure 19 shows the detail after removing the barrel and train wheel bridge. First, I remove the reduction gear (088-120) and reversing wheel (141-190). These components are part of the automatic winding mechanism. They are shown in figures 20 and 21 after removal. I make note that the reversing wheel should be installed with the brass side up.

The Miyota 9000 series of automatic movements hit the scene in 2010 and were widely seen as a reliable and fairly accurate alternative to the ETA 2824. Over the last half decade it has proven to be as reliable as expected. The movement is then flipped dial down and loaded into a movement holder for disassembly. The balance (039-102) is removed along with the balance bridge (710-191) as shown in figure 11. This automatic watch does not need any winding; the movement from your arm is more than enough to power it, a big convenience factor. Once the hour wheel spring is out of the way I can remove the dial washer (078-140), the hour wheel (075-124) and finally the cannon pinion (using your favorite cannon pinion removal tool). These parts are shown after removal in figure 16. Bulova has placed lume on the hour markers and hour/minute hands. It’s faint, as you can clearly see (or not) in this two second exposure, but it’s there. The hands are easy enough to see, as it’s mostly the hour markers that glow inconsistently.There’s also the Crystal collection comprising diamond and Swarovski crystal watches. In fact, the diamonds in Bulova watches are real, and the timepieces look simply stunning.
