About this deal

I’m not sure if Columbo’s aquired culinary skills could be put down to sloppiness of the writers, but Columbo being cured of vertigo definitely is – that’s something that really bothers me too. In Murder, Smoke and Shadows there’s this aweful scene, you know the one, where he joins his suspect in a flying director’s chair without issue. Steven Gilborn as George, the Chief Medical Examiner. This was Gilborn's final appearance as George, having appeared in a total of four episodes. Are you out of your mind? Ever since you borrowed my car and sent me on that assignment I've been trying to figure out why.

Then Trish demands marriage and a partnership as the price of not telling what she knows about the murder. Unlike Marcy, Trish got extra insurance to insure that if she dies, a letter incriminating Creighton in her's and Marcy's deaths will go to the cops. And I know that the Lord has looked into his soul, and I hope that he will guide you today in your solemn deliberations. Coleman arranges the murder of both Pais and the guy she's been seeing on the side. Being a criminal lawyer he knows how to do it. He's even got a suspect suitable for framing.I’m not a Shera hater per se, but it’s increasingly hard to justify her meaty roles in the show given her paucity of talent. I can’t speak to what others find attractive for such things are subjective. Nevertheless, in real life wildly successful record producer Phil Spector (who was not known for his looks) murdered actress Lana Clarkson (who was something like 23 years his junior). Not an exact parallel but one would think that someone that experienced and wealthy would be able to refrain from killing a lover, no matter what the argument was about.

I think it's precisely at the hour you were hoping I was at the beach, right? Ah Any more any more questions? No No, sir. My REAL problem with this episode is the fact that I've never understood how anybody could drive with that mask on. It did not look opaque to me. It looked like a photograph. That's because the perpetrator took a second bottle of champagne and he poured it into the first bottle and the glass. Had she been present at his downfall, I’d like to think that Trish’s duplicitous nature would have seen her thoroughly shove Creighton under the bus. At the very least she would have had a deserved comeuppance of her own. As things stand, though, the episode fizzles out with a whimper and Creighton has a tonne of room to manoeuvre in any subsequent legal case. They all remembered seeing her car and a motorcycle in the driveway at the same time on several Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

And so, this episode has many short sequences with lots of supporting parts (Sondra Currie, Julian Stone, Little Richard, etc.) that make it a somewhat chaotic experience. And, again, the clever killer not noticing the different brands of champagne (among other details) seems a little contrived, but then, where would Columbo be without such flawed culprits?Mr Creighton, your knowledge of forensic medicine is very Lieutenant, I want to see the autopsy report. A son who spared her the drudgeries of everyday life, who was her constant companion, who brightened her life with little gifts the most precious of which was his love for his mom. Columbo, therefore, figured out that Creighton must have hired a private detective to plant the camera in the vent, but concealed that information from him. Now, who would Creighton have hired to do this job? It would have to be someone he could trust absolutely. It would have to be someone he already knew well. It would have to be a private detective he had previously hired for other sensitive investigations and who had a proven record of discretion.

Mr Creighton, there's no way you could have known this but there's only one place in all west Los Angeles that these berries could have come from at this time of the year. I feel so stupid. I didn’t realize that it was Trish wearing the mask…..and I’ve seen this episode three times! Could it be precisely because of what CP was talking about in the review, about Trish not being in the final “gotcha” scene, muddying the waters? Or maybe it just flew over my head. Regardless, still didn’t like the mask business. Further snooping in the bedroom also reveals plaster powder on the framed discs on Marcy’s wall. This leads him to the air vent, which appears to have been recently removed. We know that’s because the PI had secreted a video camera in there, although at this stage there’s nothing for Columbo to glean from this. He does receive the good news, though, that our mate Neddy’s fingerprints have been traced and an APB is out for his arrest.

The prosecution has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant cold-bloodedly planned and ruthlessly murdered his mother, plunging a butcher knife into her body. Shera Danese's character unwittingly helped Dabney Coleman's attorney commit the murder by taking part in some "research". We don't know specifically what research she was carrying out, but clearly it involved wearing a mask and driving past a speed camera. Maybe they should have elaborated on how he persuaded her to do this, but it's made clear she didn't knowingly become involved in the murder.
