About this deal

In China, early "domino" tiles were functionally identical to playing cards. An identifiable version of Chinese dominoes developed in the 12th or 13th century. Mexican Train Dominoes has some obvious rules and some vague ones. Here are five unique scenarios you might encounter during gameplay and how to handle them." If he was not able play his drawn domino on his own train, he must top the first domino of his train (his engine) with a marker; this lets all other players know that his train can now be played on (just like a Mexican train). Splay a third domino, which again may go anywhere - on the first or second double you played or elsewhere, and may be a third double - and so on. However, this is a relatively small number especially when playing with more than four people, so many domino sets are "extended" by introducing ends with greater numbers of spots, which increases the number of unique combinations of ends and thus of pieces. Each progressively larger set increases the maximum number of pips on an end by three; so the common extended sets are double-nine (55 tiles), double-12 (91 tiles), double-15 (136 tiles), and double-18 (190 tiles), which is the maximum in practice. Larger sets such as double-21 (253 tiles) could theoretically exist, but they seem to be extremely rare if not nonexistent, as that would be far more than is normally necessary for most domino games, even with eight players. As the set becomes larger, identifying the number of pips on each domino becomes more difficult, so some large domino sets use more readable Arabic numerals instead of pips.

The public Mexican Train begins on an empty line that matches the station number (i.e., 6) in the center or shared between players. It is open to every player and can be started any time after the first round of turns. In the first turn player can match as many tiles as possible starting with the tile matching lead double for that round.

Once a player opens the public Mexican Train, each player begins their own private train of dominoes by laying a tile that matches the station number. In our example starting at 6, a player must match the 6. A very simple example is a Concentration variant played with a double-six set; two tiles are considered to match if their total pip count is 12. Each player must place a tile on each move or else place a marker indicating their train is open. If the train is already marked, leave it marked.Every tile which features a given number is a member of the suit of that number. A single tile is a member of two suits: for example, 🀴 belongs both to the suit of threes and the suit of blanks, or 0 suit. Play on your personal train for as long as possible. It’ll hinder your opponents and sustain any strategies you might have for longer. If you can’t close the double, draw 1 tile from the boneyard. If you can close it, do so. If not, play moves to the next player. This process repeats until the double is closed.
