Grills with slightly slanted cooking plates are desirable, as they encourage melted fat and oil to flow down to the drip trays. This reduces the amount of residual fat and oil on your food and makes cleaning an easier task. Versatile by design, use the electric grill as a panini press or to cook lower fat meals for guests – great for tabletop dining. In practice, the Salter Aerogrill seems to live up to its promise as a versatile cooking device. I prepared a range of foods, from halloumi kebabs, burgers and sausages, through to frozen chips and hash browns. The results were generally very good, and in some cases exceptional. We looked out for grill plates that were difficult to clean, little spots on the grill that are difficult to reach, and any damage or stained spots we noticed after we were finished cleaning. So what makes this better than any other grill that I’ve used. This one needs very little or no oil for cooking things. Add a little oil, very little and spread over with a paper towel, if you want an extra crisp on your toastie or vegetable. I made some crisp peanut butter and banana quesadillas without needing any butter or oil spread on the outside of the wrap.

Burned-on fat needs a sponge and soapy water, but if you can't detach the cooking plates you won't be able to do much more than wipe it down with a damp cloth. I was asked by The Works (yes the bookshop people, bear with me!) to try out the Salter Health Grill & Panini maker. I thought The Works only sold books but they also sell gadgets, toys, crafts and more. I’ve now got my eye on an upright turntable of all things! Smitten as I was with the ceramic cooking plates, the floating hinge was a bonus. This meant that fish, meat and vegetables of different sizes could be cooked. No need to worry about trying to squash something into the grill and opening it up to a disaster. The hole you see at the front is a draining channel, this means what oil or fat comes off your food drips into the tray for easy disposal.

After cooking we thoroughly cleaned each electric grill following the instructions and considered how straightforward the task was. Short cables are common in electric grills, as is the case with many small kitchen appliances, so you’ll need to think through where you’re going to set up your grill in your kitchen before you buy one.We cooked a medium rare steak with slices of courgette and halloumi with each grill we tested, following the cooking times in the instructions where present. A top lid that gently rests on but doesn’t squash food is desirable if you want to cook more delicate food such as halloumi and vegetables. All too often in our tests we found that grills with heavy lids squashed the life out of the food we cooked.
