About this deal

A few other points regarding the software. It is written using QT for Python with OpenCV doing the heavy lifting. I don’t have the skills but believe if this was open sourced the community could/would help with development. The scan came out reasonably good, which I attribute to its flat white surface. There was significant rounding off of the sharp edges though. I was disappointed that the eye detail is completely gone, though. Please forgive the crop on the right, as I still have not figured out how to move an object in the CR Studio software, if it’s even possible to do so. The scanner has a sleek design and at 370 grams feels quite solid. The data cable connects to the scanner with a sturdy aviation grade plug that won’t fall out when attempting hand held scans. Although many other variants of structured light projection are possible, patterns of parallel stripes are widely used. The picture shows the geometrical deformation of a single stripe projected onto a simple 3D surface. The displacement of the stripes allows for an exact retrieval of the 3D coordinates of any details on the object’s surface. The Creality CR-Scan 01 also relies on structured light scanning technology using an LED white light. Finally, the Creality CR-Scan Lizard includes binocular cameras and LED with near-infrared. CR-Scan Lizard is a revolutionary entry-level consumer 3D scanner with friendly price. It has cool features as below. Concave details are also difficult for the Lizard to scan. It works fine with relatively shallow features, but not with deep features or anything too detailed. Finally, it struggles with thin features like lattice structures. Accuracy and precisionAs with all scanners, there are some objects that are not suitable for scanning, such as transparent, reflective, or thin objects. There are developer sprays that can help with scanning transparent or reflective objects, but I did not have any due to the short turnaround time for this review. What I like Before we get started, I am not sure what technology the scanner is using. I can’t find any information about it. Is it NIR (infrared) or even lidar? Something similar to what the iPhone Pro uses? At this point, I began to become annoyed with the software. The Guide says nothing about this step at this point (but does later in the Guide). Using unfamiliar software is bad enough, but it’s even more frustrating when the directions are unclear due to poor translation. The software is basically asking you if you want to accept the automatic alignment (Qualified/Next) or manually align the scans (UnQualified/Manual alignment). CR-Scan Lizard uses the most compatible USB2.0 interface, which can support most mainstream business computers. ¶ 7. Is there any object that CR-Scan Lizard can't scan?

This is when things started to get interesting for me. After I found the calibration files I started looking around the files. When I tried to scan the bottom also, the software would not accurately align the two scans, even when I tried to help it with the manual alignment.

Hardware specs

Projecting a narrow band of light onto a three-dimensionally shaped surface produces a line of illumination that appears distorted from other perspectives than that of the projector, and can be used for geometric reconstruction of the surface shape (light section). Until this point, I thought the main issue with the software was just one of language translation since Chinese developers make the software. However, I was beginning to see signs of an amateur software developer. I was surprised because even though I have never had a Creality product, I’ve watched many videos about their 3D printers and always thought very well of them. They always seemed highly recommended. The CR-Scan Lizard scans objects using a projector and a pair of cameras. Like any other camera, they capture the light reflected off of the object and therefore scanning performance is a result of the reflectivity of the object. In ideal circumstances, this works well. But conditions aren’t always ideal. Ideal conditions This made me conclude that you may need quite a bit of practice and trial and error to scan some models. There is no speed control on the turntable.

Mindvision appears to be the manufacturer of the camera based on files I found in the installation directory. When I plugged the scanner into my Windows machine I could only see the 2 additional cameras. I also plugged it into a USB port on my Unraid server to confirm. Windows is not the most user-friendly when doing this type of investigation. The CR-Scan Lizard comes with CR Studio, a one-stop shop for scanning and editing the resulting data. Under good conditions, this is all you need to take an object from scan to a sliceable STL file for 3D printing. Automatic Multi-Pose Alignment & Powerful Model Processing Method:High-precision matching algorithm based on color and structure features, realizing multiple scan automatic synthesis function. Model editing, automatic filling repair, automatic color repair, automatic substrate recognition, non-destructive mesh simplification, automatic smooth denoising, give you a great scanning experience. With the Lizard, you can scan small or large objects with ease. The CR Studio software does the heavy lifting of optimizing models and even sends those files via the Creality Cloud directly to your 3D printer, to realize one stop solution from 3D scanning to 3D printing. Features 1. HIGH ACCURACY You can also buy a handheld stabilizer, detachable tripod kit, and the aforementioned turntable should your scanning plan require these.

What is it?

Here is a short video demoing what the projection looks like and what the camera sees. I was really surprised that the pattern doesn’t seem regular and the lines are not parallel like I have seen on other scanners. The Creality CR-Scan Lizard is an interesting foray into the world of 3D scanning. The potential for this device is amazing – imagine being able to scan your kid’s actions figures and put their own faces on them? Or scan an object to make a perfect replacement part? There’s a lot of fun things we could do with a 3D scanner.
