It is also true that neither the Gas Stop valves or other devices would prevent a BLEVE. Water shutoff valves can range from the main valve found near the water meter where water first enters your home to small, individual fixture shutoff valves that mark the transition from the branch water supply lines to the supply tubes that deliver water to faucets, toilets, and other appliances. Some of these valves are quite large while others are small. Some things in life are worth learning before it’s too late—like the locations of your water and gas shutoff valves. Now granted, these shutoff valves are often hidden in some dark, creepy corner of the house. But if a water pipe springs a leak, knowing where the shutoff valve is could save you thousands in water damage repairs. What’s more, you can’t make those major plumbing repairs or improvements unless you first turn off the water. The same goes for turning off the gas—though with some strict safety precautions, which we’ll talk about later.
Where gas appliances are in use there a should be a local or appliance gas shut off or isolating valve. This is typically a lever ball valve with a handle (often yellow). When the handle is in-line with the pipe, the valve is open and gas will flow to your appliance. To shut off the gas to the appliance, turn the handle 90 degrees so it’s perpendicular to the pipe. Locating all of your appliance shut off valves is important in case you need to use them in a hurry. If you don’t find a valve, you may not have any installed. A good gas safe plumber will help confirm that and will install suitable valves to give you that all-important control over your gas flow. Since these things can leak like crazy and cause tremendous damage, I’m replacing it with a standard supply stop as soon as I’m done with this story. When my full time/long time fire investigator was still alive. I asked him Why do the RV bottles blow up or explode? His answer was no matter if the valve is open/closed IF a fire is burning nearby the heat can and will cause the bottle/tank to vent. Venting propane causes, you guessed it more fire.
