About this deal

Santa Maria di Leuca is the southernmost town on the heel of Italy, where you might want to visit il Ciolo, a deep canyon carved by the sea. Absolutely, the Salento is worth visiting! Puglia is one of our favourite regions in Italy and the Salento is the place to come for gorgeous beaches, untouristy towns, fascinating culture, and of course, delicious food. Carpenter, T., Lynch, K., & Robinson, E. (Eds.). (2014). The Italic People of Ancient Apulia: New Evidence from Pottery for Workshops, Markets, and Customs. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. doi:10.1017/CBO9781107323513 The walls are the perfect place for a drink at sunset. We enjoyed aperitivo at Trattoria Scoglio delle Sirene with a wonderful view. Masseria Sant’Angelo– Our Salento feasts while staying at this farm were some of our most memorable meals. It may be open to non-guests a few times a week in the summer.

Agriculture plays a prominent economic role in Apulia. It is mainly intensive and modern agriculture that allows the region to be among the first in Italy for the production of many products: There is a town beach as well as stunning white sand beaches nearby at Baia di Turchi and Torre dell’Orso. And don’t miss a visit to the famous swimming hole Grotta di Poeti.Salento is known for its Salice Salentino wine, a full-bodied red made from Negroamaro grapes. Primitivo is another popular red variety. In summer, I’m a big fan of Salento rosato (rosé). Gargano Italy is one of the most scenic but overlooked parts of the southern Italian region of Puglia. Interior: Dominated by olive groves and, to the north, grain crops. Many beautiful medieval villages including the famous beehive houses. If you can’t find flights to Brindisi, Bari Airport (BRI) also works. It’s just under two hours north of Lecce and there are some amazing places to explore on the way (see our Puglia travel guide).

The food was a creative take on regional fare, and Gege was happy to adapt dishes for us vegetarians as well as serve half portions so we could try a few different pasta dishes. It’s well worth spending a day or two away from the coast to explore the golden, extravagantly carved churches, picturesque piazzas, and excellent bars and restaurants.

About Puglia

We didn’t eat in Peschici, but I’ve heard good things about Porta di Basso if you like fish. It’s an elegant seafood restaurant up on a cliff with stunning sea views. In the Gargano, visit the old cities of Monte Sant'Angelo, Lucera, Manfredonia, and San Severo, and the Padre Pio sanctuary of San Giovanni Rotondo. Vieste is near to the Foresta Umbra national park and is the holiday capital of the Gargano.
